Artistic communities seem to evolve in places where you’d least expect them. Once in while, given the right circumstances, a synergy develops and grows over time into something with a life of it’s own. A confluence of plentiful available space, an inspirational setting and a critical mass of like-minded people (both artists and interested appreciators) can gel into a supportive artistic community.
In case you have not noticed, those forces seem to be coming together in Johnson City. With a major internationally known art foundation, several fine art galleries, many other business establishments showing fine art and a large cadre of contemporary artists living there, a change is underway in this Texas Hill Country town.
Showcasing this community and their presence in the Hill Country, an “Art Walk” every last Saturday of the month in Johnson City has been building in momentum over the past couple of years.
With Arts Encounters at Beninis (every other month), Kirchman Galleries receptions, Watson Studio Gallery receptions, and open-house at several other businesses who show art, Art Walk is becoming the place-to-be on the last Saturday of every month in Johnson City. Food, wine, live music, an eclectic group of people and always fine art, this event is a fun way to spend a Saturday (4p.m. - 8p.m.).
Exhibitions at their galleries change constantly, allowing visitors the opportunity to see different art works every time they visit. The receptions are held on the last Saturday of the month.
Watson Studio Gallery is host to all kinds of amazing photographic and digital imaging. Again, exhibitions change often, always offering something new to see and enjoy. Artist and gallery owner/director Carol Watson is a talented award-winning photographer.
The Benini Sculpture Ranch is home to upwards of 130 large scale sculptures created by nationally and internationally known artists, as well as the works of Benini, himself an internationally recognized painter and sculptor. The ranch is open to the public and hosts an event featuring art related presentations every other month (except July), on the last Saturday and Sunday. Check their website for the schedule of speakers.
Other venues exhibiting Fine Art in Johnson City and hosting events on the last Saturdays of the month include the Black Spur Emporium and Gallery, the Silver K Café and the Friendly Bar and Bistro, among others.
Join the fun and come to the Johnson City Last Saturday Art Walk to see lots of interesting and diverse fine art, as well as to meet the participants and enjoy the evolving artistic community of this Hill Country town.
