Winter came with its challenges this year, but on the first full Friday of spring, it’s officially time to celebrate. Halle Puckett performed her recital for Blanco Performing Arts just eight days shy of one year after the original scheduled date, and it was absolutely worth the wait. The shutdown associated with COVID-19 postponed her concert from March 28, 2020 to March 20, 2021. This was Puckett’s first public performance in a year. Listening to Puckett perform certainly supports the theory that some talents can be inherited as her parents are concert pianists.
Judge Brett Bray called the Blanco County Commissioners Court to order at 9 a.m. Tuesday with all four commissioners present. There were no public comments at this time. The minutes of the prior meeting were approved. There was one proposed line item transfer from Commissioner Chris Liesmann and it was approved.
Beginning March 29, Keep Blanco Beautiful (KBB) will have a sign-up list for residents who need assistance during the upcoming Trash-Off event at Blanco City Hall. The list is for those who need help due to health concerns, disabilities, etc.; this includes anyone needing items picked up curbside at their home during the trash-off.
Blanco County was well represented on March 13, at the State BB Gun Competition held in Fredericksburg. Fourteen shooters from Blanco County participated out of total overall participants of approximately 76. The competition included several teams and individuals throughout the State of Texas. With family, friends and coaches gathered Monday, Blanco senior Presley Young signed a commitment to play basketball for Angelo State University. Young will play guard for the Belles, who compete in the NCAA Division II Lone Star Conference. The teams in the West Division of the LSC in addition to Angelo State are Lubbock Christian, West Texas A&M, Midwestern State and UT Permian Basin. Young put together a stellar career at Blanco High School.
The Blanco baseball team used great hitting, outstanding pitching and solid defense to pick up an 11-1 run-rule win over Cuero on March 17. On a day, St. Patrick’s Day, when wearing green should bring good luck, the Gobbler colors weren’t enough against the well-balanced play of the blue and gold of the Panthers.

The Blanco softball team started its District 25-3A schedule last Friday with a 20-3 three inning run-rule win against Ingram. The win moved the Lady Panthers to 7-8 overall and 1-0 in district play. Lily Porter earned the win in the pitching circle. She faced 18 batters and struck out two. Catherine Seymour led the Panthers at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a single, a double and three RBI.
1953-2021
Vernon Dale Hart, age 67 of Blanco, formerly of Seguin, passed away on March 6, 2021. Dale was born on June 13, 1953 in Baytown, Texas. He attended Baytown Sterling High School. While working at SMI in Seguin he was offered a chance to get his GED. He graduated 3 days before his oldest son from Seguin High School.
Mary Ethel Sparkman Weirich, 74 of Johnson City went to be with our Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 20, 2021. She passed away peacefully with husband and daughter by her side. She was born to the late Sidney and Voyle Sparkman on Feb. 13, 1947, in Beeville. Mary graduated from George West High School and received a bachelor of music education degree from Baylor University. Clifford Steve Vradenburg of Canyon Lake passed away Saturday, March 13, 2021 in San Antonio. Steve was born Feb. 7, 1941 in San Antonio, to Clifford H. Vradenburg and Violet D. Bookout Vradenburg. Following high school graduation, Steve became an electrician for the local No. 60 in San Antonio. He enjoyed the outdoors.
