Meals on Wheels may expand to HSB
Thu, March 17, 2016 4:49 PM

Meals on Wheels wants to know if there is a need to expand its senior nutrition program delivery to Horseshoe Bay and nearby neighborhoods in Llano County. Horseshoe Bay resident Karen Jones said if there are enough people who would use Meals on Wheels to warrant establishment of a local Meals on Wheels program, then efforts will be made to bring this life enhancing service to HSB and surrounding communities such as Oak Ridge, Blue Lake, Deerhaven and Sandy Harbor.

If you might want a hot meal delivered to your home on weekdays, now is the time to speak up and let Meals on Wheels know their service is needed in the HSB area. Neighboring cities such as Llano, Burnet and Marble Falls have active Meals on Wheels programs, and as the HSB area continues to mature and grow, Meals on Wheels wants to know if sufficient numbers of residents would benefit from their service.

Meals on Wheels is committed to serving hot, home-cooked, nutritious meals five days a week, 52 weeks per year to home bound seniors free of charge. But perhaps more importantly, Meals on Wheels volunteers make daily contact with seniors and provide a friendly, in person, “Hello, how are you today?” well-being service. The hot meals are prepared daily at the Boys and Girls Club in Marble Falls.

Seniors who receive home delivery usually have limited ability to drive, shop or cook for themselves. Meals on Wheels is a community service supported by public and private funding that enables seniors to remain in their homes and maintain independence longer, which contributes to their overall health and well-being.

Any homebound person who has reached his or her 60th birthday may qualify for the program. Individuals under 60 may also qualify for the Meals on Wheels Program if they are disabled.

Nita Burton, manager of the Hill Country Community Action Association in Kingsland, said, “We hope folks will respond to our inquiry so we can gauge what the needs are in the community and if we have enough seniors to support this wonderful service.” Any Llano County resident interested in receiving Meals on Wheels services is invited to contact Burton at (325) 388-4608 (most callers do not need to dial “1” before the area code) to discuss eligibility and intake procedures. Burton will come to callers’ homes to interview respondents about their needs and help with the required paperwork to sign up for Meals on Wheels. If a sufficient number of folks living in the HSB area sign up for Meals on Wheels, the service will recruit volunteer drivers and start home meal delivery as soon as possible.
