Born in Dallas, Michael Martin Murphey was exposed to traditional cowboy songs while working on his grandfather’s ranch. He moved to Austin in 1971 and played a huge part in the progressive country movement that was taking place there. Murphey, along with Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Gary P. Nunn, led a movement that combined country and rock music. Murphey’s first album, Geronimo’s Cadillac, was a groundbreaking album on the Texas music scene. His biggest hit came in 1975 when he wrote
