The jail was built in 1885 by famed architect, Eugene Heiner, only 45 years after Texas won its independence. It was in operation until 1975, yet despite that fact only 3 prisoners were actually executed here, and all before 1924.

When the jail was built here all those years ago, some thought Gonzales might get as big as San Antonio hence the reason such a big, big house was built.

GHOSTS OF GONZALES COUNTY JAIL MUSEUM

Past investigators to this jail such as Alejandro from Dead Explorer has always found extreme paranormal activity on their investigations.

Alejandro says:

I experienced two intense incidents in the “Lunatic’s room”. One time an investigator felt like he was getting choked. Another time, I felt a spirit trying to communicate through me. I’ve performed several investigations and this is one of the few times I’ve felt that happen. In my own opinion, this place is very much haunted. Equipment also failed when the courthouse clock chimed at the top of the hour, like it was the last hour of a prisoner’s life (there a legend about a prisoner who was obsessed with the clock tower and who was hung in 1921)

There has also been reports of disembodied voices and very clear EVP’s!

This is from the Director of Gonzales County Jail, Sandra Wolff:

There were three executions carried out upstairs on a gallows. The last prisoner to be executed placed a “curse” on the Courthouse clock, which he could see from his jail cell. There is a replica of the gallows which was still in the jail in 1951. I know what the original one looked like because I lived in the jail for ten years and saw it before my Dad, the Sheriff, ordered it taken down and removed. My father was Sheriff for 18 years and my mom cooked for the prisoners.

Some of the things which have been noticed while investigating are:

scratches, hair pulling (only on women in a certain section), footsteps, whistling, shadows, oppressive feeling, nausea and one case of choking. A manifestation was witnessed by a 17 year old empath about 3 years ago in the high security section.
