The 82nd Blanco County 4-H and FFA Youth Show begins Wednesday, January 13th at the Blanco County Show Barn in Johnson City. This year there are more than 390 entries. These leaders of tomorrow put in many hours, and oftentimes, a lot of their hard-earned money working towards a successful project and show. They invite you to attend the three-day show, and also show your support at the sale on Saturday the 16th. Wednesday, January 13 the show will begin at 4:30 p.m.
As Blanco County officials are laying the groundwork for the arrival of one of the approved COVID-19 vaccines, countywide case statistics show that the virus is not letting up. As of Jan. 3, the county has 313 total confirmed COVID-19 cases, including five deaths, according to Blanco County Emergency Management. JCVFD Vice President Kemp Elliott called the regular business meeting of JCVFD to order at 6:03 p.m. on December 30 and a quorum was established. Those present included President Ray Bible via teleconference, and Whitney Liesmann, Sam Richardson, Orlando Ibanez, Chris Welch, Kemp Elliott, Jed Felps, Aaron Luedtke, and Penny Whisenant attending in person.
Although it was their Winter Break, students with the First United Methodist Church youth group spent the day clearing debris for local residents, Bill and Janey Wiemers of Stonewall.  Students are hard at work earning money towards their June 2021 youth group mission trip to Alaska.
It’s a new year, but the news out of the capital continues to focus on COVID-19. Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted last week that “a significant portion of vaccines distributed across Texas might be sitting on hospital shelves as opposed to being given to vulnerable Texans. The state urges vaccine providers to quickly provide all shots.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates went home empty handed last Tuesday as the Lady Eagles picked up their first Varsity district win and both Eagles teams were victorious. Freshman Sky Hurlbut led the Lady Eagles with 14 points followed by Freshman Carly Norton and Junior Darien Marshal with 9 points each.
The January 16 meeting of the Highland Lakes Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will be a Zoom meeting, with sign-in starting at 1:00pm. Registration is required; use the link below. The Johnson City Womans Civic Club members celebrated the Christmas season together December 14 on Zoom videoconferencing with a program of Reindeer Games and a creative version of the story “ The Night Before Christmas,” led by Diane Burke and Ingrid Moursand, respectively. Karen Prather reported that the JCWCC collected member donations of $380 for the November Service Project.
Saturday January 16, 2021 is the date for the 12th Annual Blanco County Youth Show Salsa Contest.  Winner will have year-long bragging rights as the best Salsa maker in Blanco County and will receive an engraved BOSS Mug by Creative Awards in Fredericksburg. Dora Dell Summy Watson of Hye, Texas passed away Thursday, December 24th, 2020 at the age of 92. Dora was born on July 23, 1928 in Johnson City, Texas to Fernando G. and Lucille Summy. Dora is survived by her husband of 75 years, Thomas Watson of Hye; three daughters- Edna Whisenant of Marble Falls, Barbara and husband Jim Bob Bryant of Austin, Deborah and husband Roger Gibson of Granite Shoals; eleven grandchildren; twenty greatgrandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. ...
It was the finest management training I ever completed. All the principles taught were taught in a useful, meaningful context. Oh, I had attended multiple management conferences taught by PhDs who had come from afar carrying briefcases. Each came from a top-notch university or from some big-name corporation. But this beat them all.

2020 has certainty been a year of years. I do not need to recount the events of this year; we all know them too well. It is just strange to think that it was less than a year ago since we impeached the president, yet it seems more like a decade.
Gemütlichkeit is one of those German words that has no precise English equivalent. It is tricky to spell and only a German can pronounce it properly. It has nothing to do with sneezing. Google says gemütlichkeit is a noun meaning “comfort, coziness or friendliness,” but that’s like saying Lyndon Johnson was a politician or Chester Nimitz a sailor. Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) was a forester, a conservationist, a teacher, a hunter, a naturalist and an extremely talented and prolific writer who lived in the first half of the twentieth century. He is most famous for writing “A Sand County Almanac”, although he also wrote a textbook on game management and over 500 articles, essays and papers on all aspects of conservation and the natural world.
