Raising Deer in Captivity
Dear Editor,
A disturbing trend in Texas and across the nation is drawing attention from hunters and non-hunters alike – raising deer in captivity, much like livestock, and then releasing them to be hunted as little as 10 days later. Extreme animal husbandry practices such as repeated forced semen collection, artificial insemination, bottle raising, and often cavalier use of drugs to create abnormally large antlers are common in this industry, but have no place in wildlife management.

Dear Texas Senate,
It is unfortunate that you feel the need to vilify our Texas public schools because your top campaign contributions come from folks who are determined to see vouchers finally pass. Condemning our public schools and casting harsh accusations of widespread failure is not only disrespectful and counterproductive, it is just flat inaccurate.

There are so many great things happening in Llano! One major project that is underway is the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) upgrade to the traffic signals at the intersections of State Highway 16/71 with Ollie, Sandstone, and Main Streets. When I first came to Llano, several businesses approached me about the four lane road that ran in front of their businesses, leaving little room for patrons to park and disembark from their vehicles.
District Attorney Wiley B. 'Sonny' McAfee will be the guest speaker at the Tuesday, April 14, 2015 Highland Lakes Republican Women's meeting to be held at the Llano Public Library, 102 East Haynie Street, Llano, TX, starting at 11:30 am. Stacy Burke, prosecutor for the nearly formed Child Abuse Prosecution Unit, will be attending along with the District Attorney.
They will be discussing the progress made with the child abuse victims grant after the first year in effect.
The Llano Alliance for Drug Intervention (LADI) has had on the market for several years, a little white lunch bag labeled LOVE YOUR CHILD HOME DRUG TEST KIT. This simple little sack contains all that a parent (or a prospective employer) needs to drug test a person without having to go to a clinic or hospital.

Have you ever played soccer with a beach ball? That's not so odd, but how about if you ARE the beach ball?
For "Bubble Soccer", players are dressed in person-sized inflatables, encased in a beach ball, with only legs exposed. The teams try to get a soccer ball into a small goal cage, about the size of the goal in ice hockey.

ARLINGTON—Faith Academy's superb season fell two games shy of a state championship, March 6, when the Lady Flames of Marble Falls lost to eventual runner-up Houston Lutheran, 66-52, in the TAPPS Class 3A semifinals.
"It was frustrating," said Hall of Fame coach, Jerry English. "We've been a heck of a lot more than a one-person team; just couldn't get it done."
That one person, though, was 6'6"
Christy Vassar, whom it seems, has thrown more pitches than Madison Bumgarner will this year, did not need too many, March 7 in Fredericksburg. She fired a perfect game against Carrizo Springs. No hyperbole in the use of the word perfect: it's as good as a pitcher can do, yielding no hits and no walks, and her defense committed no errors.
Two good pitching performances meant two victories for the Llano baseball Jackets, March 6 and 7, in the annual Hill Country Classic.
"Pleased with the weekend," said head coach Stephen Campbell. "{The wins} give us something to look forward to."
More wins, I guess.

Outlook for Today’s Investors: Less Certainty — but Potential Opportunities
The world of today is vastly different from the one that existed in, say, 1974. Innovations such as the Internet, smartphones, tablets, Facebook, Twitter and so on have made our lives more enjoyable, efficient and productive in many ways, and have vastly improved our access to the world's knowledge. Yet when it comes to one important area of our lives — investing for the future — many of us may actually face more challenges today than we might have in the past.

This is the time of year when everyone seems to be saying to themselves, "maybe I should try to start exercising or dieting." Just in time for your summer plans of a healthy lifestyle, the local Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office is launching Step Up & Scale Down, a 12-week weight management program to help the public in their efforts.
The series will kick off March 25, 2015 at Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Office in Llano.

Before I was married, I had no problem about always telling the truth. I always got in trouble if I did not tell the truth and so my practice has been to always tell the truth, no matter how difficult it might be and no matter who it might hurt.
After being married for several years, I was presented with a question I was in no way prepared for.
During the 1968 Olympics, held in Mexico City, John Stephen Akwari, a marathoner, represented Tanzania. His hopes were high but along the way he stumbled and fell, injuring his knee and ankle and enabling a runner from Ethiopia to win the gold.
Events for the day were nearly finished and the crowd dwindling when a siren sounding at the finishing gate caught the attention of the remaining contestants and spectators.
Some of the brothers-in-law that emerged from the families who were the earliest Anglo settlers in Llano County have been recognized in recent weeks. Coming from the east across the Colorado River, or bypassing the river entirely at its southern most bend, Anglos took up land in what became Llano County as early as 1852.

KERRVILLE—You can't exactly say the Llano High boys' golf team was peaking in a two-city tournament, March 27-28, but you can say it did not play its best and still: finished second in a 13-school event, beat the toughest team it will face in district, and downed three of the closest competitors it has for the Region IV championship.
"The kids know they left a whole lot of shots on the course,"
I'm not saying firing Rick Barnes (or forcing him out) was a terrible move—more like 50-50—but Athletic Director Steve Patterson's MO was bad and obviously transparent. Did he wake up in the middle of the night and say, "I think I've got it!"?
Patterson told Barnes to get rid of one or two or however many assistants, and Barnes could probably keep his job.
SAN SABA—It was a solid, if not great, showing by the Llano Track & Field boys' team, March 26. Nothing occurred, though, at the Armadillo Relays that should really worry anyone concerning hopes at the district meet in Liberty Hill, April 15-16.
The girls, on the other hand-off, had more promising results than they've shown in 2015.
The 800-meter race possibly offered the most thrilling—and unusual—finish of the day and night at Mill Pond Park.
It has been a bad start in district play for the Llano softball Jackets, but, in their defense, they have faced three of the best Class 4A pitchers in the state, with a one-inning cameo by a fourth.
