Dear Reader,
Last week, due to lack of space, my letter was abbreviated. This week, I'll submit the rest, albeit somewhat updated, having attended the City Council meeting Monday evening.
I was glad to see a good turnout because, for one thing, in my opinion, it's going to "take a village" to accomplish the Herculean task of getting the Center back on its feet.
Recently my son and I were cleaning out my saddle shed and found three baby raccoons huddled in a bucket in a corner! I carefully poured them into a ‘havahart’ trap to quickly turn them loose out on the ground.
I was going to call a friend thinking he might want one for a pet.
My son, a Texas Game Warden, said NO!
The law today makes it unlawful to keep a wild animal in captivity regardless of how it was acquired.
As hunters and lovers of the outdoors, we all have places that are near and dear to our hearts; places that the mere thought of brings a smile and rekindles great memories. Red River County in northeast Texas is such a place for me. I spent my formative years growing up on our broiler farm in the northern part of the county.
I’d like to share my latest “Only in Llano” story.
I have lived here in Llano County since I was three years old and have hundreds of great Llano stories…But this is one that cannot wait. This one is about two young men that will make Llano proud.
Most people know that I have horses and have taken my son Thomas Murray to the Special Olympics several times.
Pollinators are high on the list this season. And for this gardener, it has been a high priority for building and growing a habitat for them. Here’s what we all can do to help our pollinators survive and thrive: As you plan your gardens, make sure there are many flowering plants that are blooming well into the fall.
Those of us in the media often refer to photographs as ‘images’. This past week, I was looking through some ‘images’ I have in the form of color slides, film negatives, prints and digital images. As I was tackling the daunting task of organizing these pictorial records of my outdoor adventures, I often paused and reflected upon the day I snapped the shutter and captured that particular image.
Over the past few months I have been humanely trapping some of the neighborhood feral cats roaming in the East part of town. I quite often see new litters of kittens from these feral cats. Some of these cats have been killed by passing cars which is a hard way for an animal to die. Llano Police Officer/Animal Control Officer Kenneth Poe has been picking up these cats and finding them homes, mostly as barn cats. Recently I set up a monthly donation to the Llano Animal Rescue organization.
Starting on the fall season garden. Yes, it is July and a stormy one at that, with high winds and cloudy skies that are turning our spring summer gardens into a mess! But after the downed limbs are removed and the tomatoes righted, we are in a good place to prepare for the fall garden.
The rotation of crops and recycling of space is known as "succession planting."
You get your money’s worth if you listen to Big 12 Commissioner, Bob Bowlsby. He delivered his annual keynote address at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, July 15, and that talk kicked off Big 12 Conference Football Media Days.
Years ago…
“This is college football’s 150th anniversary. The first game was Princeton and Rutgers.” The gridiron today: “It’s the best regular season in all of sports, especially the months of October and November.”
Not in the stands?
“The new digit ...
I got sucker-punched recently. I was watching some game on ESPN, I guess, because I got confused and thought the History Channel’s three-hour documentary on the 1920 presidential election was on, but it was not till the next night.
Anyway, I noticed on the quite popular bottom line on Ess-pin that Texas and Texas A&M were playing each other in December!
