WIMBERLEY—It was a routine six games, August 14-15, for the Llano volleyball Jackets, here at the Tex Fest, and this was after starting the campaign at home, August 11. Kaymon Lange showed what fine junior and senior seasons she should have in that 2015 opener against Sonora. Skye Sanderson and CeCe Overstreet, in their first varsity matches, also played well on a team with just two seniors. The contest did not have a happy ending, however, as the Broncos, down one, captured the confrontation ...
BURNET—Bulldog Field looked superb, August 14, as it unveiled its GreenFields synthetic turf, the same carpet Llano will show off, August 20, against Sonora. The ‘Dogs dominated the Jackets in the first of the two-scrimmage month, but head coach Craig Slaughter delivered an “Upon Further Review” rebuttal to his own comments. “I was definitely hoping to have more success,” he said following the game, but, after watching the replay—on video in the athletic offices—his call was:
Coaching changes in sports are about as unexpected as Ronda Rousey winning a fist fight in a minute-10, but Llano High Athletic Director Craig Slaughter said, “Never in my career, this late.” He was referring to the surprise announcement around August 10 by boys’ basketball head varsity coach, Aidan Callahan, that he is leaving the Jackets for an academics’ job at the University of Texas.
Just when summer is really starting to heat up in Texas, it is almost time for children to go back to school. Soon motorists will be sharing the roads with school buses, pedestrians, bicycle riders, and lots of new teen drivers taking their first car to school. According to the National Safety Council, teen car crashes spike in September when they are driving to and from school.
Some say the electric feeling of buying and moving into your own home never wears off. When you own the floors you’re standing on, the walls surrounding you and the roof over your head, you also own great satisfaction from the hard work that resulted in your home becoming yours. Yet, just as it was hard work to achieve the American Dream of homeownership, being responsible for maintaining and, inevitably, repairing your own home can be just as much hard work.
Sitting among a seasoned group of sermon makers to examine a young minister for ordination was not a new experience for me. I had no way of knowing, however, that this one under pressure would shock me with his answer to an important question and send me home wiser than when I came. Ordination councils are usually made up of ministers from many churches.
I know some things are better put into that black abyss called forgetfulness, to be remembered no more, not even when they would help win an argument. According to the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage, forgetting some things is more important than winning an argument. Not that I would know.

Llano Texas is as vulnerable as any Texas town to drought. The people of Llano are understandably sensitive to drought, because of their proximity to the Llano River and their experiences from the 1950’s drought. As a member of the Central Texas Water Coalition’s research team, I’m fulfilling an obligation to pass on at least some relevant information, as CTWC attempts to keep abreast of current climatology issues. For example, we learned 14 months ago from our State Climatologist, Dr.
Descendants and friends of Frank and Mary Rhoades had its annual fish fry and reunion on August 8, 2015 at the Llano American Legion Hall. We are grateful for the use of this wonderful building. I can’t believe another year has come and gone, but here I am trying to get the news out.

People always ask, “Are things slowing down now that Summer Reading Program is over”? And that really is a busy time for us – in fact, it gets a little crazy, but throughout the year, we move from one project or program right into the next and usually have several going or in the planning stages constantly.
On August 4, the City of Llano water/wastewater crews discovered a discharge pipe, leading from pump number one to the check valve, had ruptured, which in turn caused a pump failure. The main lift station, where the rupture occurred, collects all the wastewater for the city (approximately 300,000 gallons per day) and which is then pumped to the wastewater treatment plant. The lift station operates on one pony pump and two lead pumps.

Will the renovations at Jacket Stadium be finished for the start of football season? New track and artificial turf, scoreboard and clock? Well, completion is getting close, but as usual, it depends on the weather, Dean Sharp, consultant and “project manager” for the bond building program, told the Llano School Board Tuesday night. The spring rains delayed progress, but that obstacle was overcome, and no rain to speak of since.
