Hunting season began for me several weekends ago when my car was “attacked” by a feral hog on RR2241 between CR215 and the Harlow-James place. Of course, this is an exaggeration, but the incident did result in the death of an unsuspecting animal. The word “attacked” was used because I didn’t hit the hog, it hit me.
WACO—Tiger Maddox, Llano High Class of 2015, is on an unbeaten team this season. Through November 4, the Baylor football Bears were 7-0. Maddox, a freshman, is a cheerleader, and it’s changed just a bit since I was in high school—the men and women on the sidelines work about as hard as the players do. “Baylor has become a part of me in the couple of months I’ve been here,” Tiger said.
Four teams (out of five) make the playoffs from 13-4A, Division II. Navarro (3-0 in district) is the number one seed; Wimberley (3-1) is two. If the Jackets (1-2) lose to Navarro, November 6, and Lytle (1-2) beats Hondo (0-3), it’s simple, the Owls go winless in district and are out. If Hondo beats the Pirates and Llano loses to the Panthers, it’s a three-way tie for third, fourth, and fifth, and the difference in points in the three games among those three squads decides the third and four ...
It was a package deal, and the big-play bundle was bountiful for Llano, which whipped Hondo, 32-20, October 30, and clinched an invitation to the postseason assembly. The win helped dim the memory of some tough losses, and, with unbeaten Navarro ready to host the Jackets in the regular-season closer, a victory was mandatory to assure Game 11. “The defense was consistent,” said head coach Craig Slaughter.
The Llano Freshman and Junior Varsity teams played different opponents this past week, but both recorded the same winning results! The Llano Freshmen team hosted Jarrell while the JV team traveled to Hondo to battle the Owls. The Llano Varsity 5th & 6th grade team ended their season this past weekend with a semi-final playoff loss to the #1 seeded Kingsland Yellowjackets. The Llano team had a fine season as they made the playoffs for the 5th straight year, which was a great accomplishment as they only returned 3 players from last season’s championship team and the roster consisted primarily of 5th grade players.
The Daubers now prepare to take on the Geronimo Navarro Panthers this Thursday evening as the 8th graders travel to Navarro to play at 4:30 and 5:45 while the 7th graders stay in the friendly confines of Jacket Stadium to face the Panthers also at 4:30 and 5:45. 7th Grade Daubers Llano Daubers White…6 vs.
When the phone on my desk rang late, it caught me scanning newspaper ads in search of a used car. I had no idea that call would send me on an unforgettable journey. The caller told me his sister had given birth that day to a baby boy who lived only four hours.
I do not often get under the weather; after all, as tall as I am my head is usually in the clouds. At least, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage thinks this is the case. And who is to argue with her. But this time I was under the weather. My head was stuffed and every other breath I took I had a sneezing fit.
Square. What a word. From Vulgar Latin exquadra (how vulgar indeed). According to trusty Webster. The word evolved to Old French esquarre. Remember Four Square? What a game. The square. What a place. Not every town has one. Nor do they have Square Plate. One of the restaurants in town. You can get a square meal there. And it's served on square plates. Bratwurst, schnitzel, kraut, cabbage. Turkey and dressing. Pot roast. Sandwiches, burgers, salads. Bread pudding and brownies. Cheesecake, tarts. ...
