The Lion's Roar

On July 20 the Mason Lions Club met at Nachos for their weekly meeting. Any ladies or gentlemen who are interested in joining the Mason Lions Club and serving the Mason community need only ask any Mason Lion!

The Lions welcomed as guests Jim Lyles and David Lampman, guest of Lion Will McCann.

County Commissioner Lion Will Frey brought the Lions up to date on the courthouse projects, particularly the status of the damaged trees on the north side.

Like all of us, Lion Frey regretted that the remnants of the beautiful trees had to go. They would not thrive with the fire damage, and the trees would be a danger to the building in the future.

Soon afterwards I had the sad experience of watching a huge boom with a saw lop off large parts of the crown and drop them to the ground, where an enormous wood chipper soon cut them into little chips.

Rather than lamenting the loss of the trees, perhaps the Lions Club might be permitted the honor of planting replacement trees with an appropriate ceremony as a service to the community. Then we all could look to how beautiful the trees would be in 2121 and how much those who come after us would enjoy the strength and beauty of the trees.

Surely they would then know that we too enjoyed the beauty of the trees and looked expectantly to the future. Lion Frey reported that next month scaffolding would go up all around the courthouse in preparation for major work to begin.

Lion Frey answered a question about the courthouse bell—the fire melted parts of it, the bell fell to the ground, and the bell suffered damage that could not be repaired, The county will place the bell in a memorial on the courthouse grounds later.

No decision has been made to use the old school bell or commission a new bell. Perhaps some generous member of the community might like to donate a memorial bell?

Community members are working vigorously to help raise funds for the reconstruction of the courthouse, Robert Earl King will appear here in concert sometime in October to benefit the courthouse work.

The Friends of the Courthouse, quickly received their IRS 501(c)(3) status, thanks to hard efforts by Lion Judge Bearden and Congressman Luger, so that all donations to that organization will be tax deductible.

The county plans to auction off courthouse artifacts in the future, when the county can be assured that the artifacts do not have toxic matter in them.

The Mason Lions Club is very proud of its state and national Service contributions in addition to its many local Service activities. Won't you come and join this group actively providing Service to our community and nation?

The Mason Lions Club also promotes sight conservation in our community. Anyone who has used eyeglasses to donate may give them to a Lions Club member or place them in collection boxes at the local banks. Also, if anyone needs financial assistance with eyeglasses, please speak to a local Lions Club member.

The Mason Lions Club Charitable Foundation is a 501c(3) non-profit organization devoted to service to the community. If you wish to serve your community, come join the Mason Lions Club. Ladies as well as gentlemen are welcome to help us improve our service to Mason and the surrounding area.
