History and fire safety were main topics at the November 22 meeting of the Blanco County Commissioners. Commissioner Granberg also gave a report on the recycling center for 2016. They quickly finished their routine business items and went on to approve the Judge Bray or the Blanco County Sheriff to authorize the Sheriff Department’s enrollment in the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority’s exempt status system. Cottonwood Shores/Horseshoe Bay/Marble Falls, TX – Back by popular demand, this holiday season the Hill Country Community Theatre will also be holding a very special event. “Hill Country Christmas on the Air” is a modern, old-fashioned radio variety show and sing-a-long. “One of our goals here at the Hill Country Community Theatre is to provide even more entertainment for the community to enjoy,” said Mike Rademaekers the theatre’s executive director.
Friends of the Johnson City Library reopened their thrift shop as the Red Door Resale Shop on September 7. All proceeds from sales at the shop, after expenses, are designated to pay the balance on the Library loan. The Friends of the Library says thank you to our community for its support of the Red Door Resale Shop with generous donations and purchases.
I remember reading a letter to Ann Landers, the syndicated columnist who could solve everyone’s problems. A woman complained that she had just turned 40 and her life was over. How could anyone cope with being past life’s prime? Ms. Landers replied by publishing a letter she received from a young man in his early twenties who was suffering from a form of cancer that would inevitably, in a short time, end his life. “I will never see age 40,” he said.
Larry Shannon Milner received his heavenly crown on November 20, 2016. He was born on May 22, 1937 to Mary Brownfield Milner and Murray Milner in Dallas, Texas. Larry grew up in Dallas and Brownwood, Texas and proudly served two years aboard ship in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelors Degree in Government before beginning his incredible career journey.

The worst thanksgiving service I ever saw advertised was from a fellowship in Dripping Springs that had a special “Thanking the Earth” ceremony at their church. I also saw this bumper sticker: “Did you thank a green plant today?” I could not get it out of my head how far away from God these people must have been to go from thanking their Creator to thanking the creation. City hall has a new employee in the form of a High School Intern. Alyssa Rose started in the Public Works Department of City Hall through the new internship program sponsored by Lyndon B. Johnson High School. LBJ High School Principal, Julie Storer reported that this is the first year the high school started offering internships through their Career Preparation and Ag Practicum classes.
On the morning of Monday, November 21 construction crews arrived at the Crider Motel on Avenue F and began demolition. The demolition of the building has been met with mixed reviews some welcome the change while others lament the loss of a historical building. The Crider Motel is widely known for housing those on staff with President Lyndon B.
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Llano County, will sponsor a CEU Conference on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Lyssy & Eckel Feeds, Inc. in Llano. This program will be for individuals who possess a valid private applicators license, a commercial applicators license, or a non-commercial applicators license, and need continuing education units (CEUs) to help with fulfilling their re-certification requirements.
Up and coming country music sensation Cameran Nelson lives in Blanco and is No. 1 in Texas. The 33-year-old has a string of five consecutive songs reaching the top spot on the Texas Music Chart, including all four singles released from his second album, “Good Thing Going.” “I love Blanco,” Nelson told the Blanco County News.
JOHNSON CITY, TEXAS – Gather the family and come out to Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park to celebrate the holiday season at “Christmas Through the Years in LBJ Country” on Saturday, December 3, in Johnson City, Texas. This National Park Service centennial celebration will run from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
Pedernales Electric Cooperative today announced it will distribute nearly $8.9 million in capital credits to members this year, raising the lifetime distribution to $99 million since 2007. The 2016 distribution was approved in October after the PEC Board of Directors reviewed the cooperative’s fiscal health and determined the amount will not result in any adverse impact. Because PEC is a cooperative owned by its members, it does not earn profits.
The Lady Eagle 7th and 8th grade girls traveled to Comfort for their first basketball game of the season Monday evening. The Lady Eagle 7th graders got off to a fast start, jumping out to a quick lead. Comfort quickly closed the gap and took the lead themselves. Comfort then went on to outscore the Lady Eagles 18-0 over the next two quarters.
Mikayla Frederick of Lyndon B. Johnson High School received her invitation to the National Society of High School Scholars back in July, just before beginning her senior year. She was noticed by the NSHSS for her exceptional score on the US History STAAR Test. Her plans for after graduation is to go to San Antonio College to complete her core classes and transfer into University of Texas San Antonio to study criminology.

This week it happens again; a couple of hundred Johnson City residents and visitors come to the First United Methodist Church for a free community feast with neighbors, friends and folks they don’t know yet. It’s all provided by the church and manned by volunteers, from the turkey cooks to the clean-up crew. Turkeys are provided, along with the essentials: dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy.
During the holiday season, Johnson City becomes a much brighter spot on the map. Lights Spectacular powers up this Friday, November 25. From the Pedernales Electric campus to the Blanco County Courthouse in the Johnson City square, over two million lights will illuminate the town. Memorial Park is overflowing with Christmas decorations and the streets are lined with snowflakes and Santas. The season-long celebration kicks off this Friday at the annual “Let there be Light” event.
