Ready to tinker, test and tackle new challenges? Homeschool Day at the Science Mill this month is focused on careers in engineering, and will be held on Feb. 3 and Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Construct a robotic hand with moving fingers, race balloon-powered rockets and design an earthquake-proof tower that can stand up to the shake test.
Vaccine pace picks up slowly
The rate of COVID-19 vaccine administration is slowly increasing in Texas as we enter the second full month of shots going into arms. The Texas Department of State Health Services last weekend reported that about 1.6 million Texans — overwhelmingly frontline health workers, people over 65 or those with chronic health conditions — have received the first dose.
We all know the story. On February 2nd, people come from all over to gather and watch a diminutive critter crawl out into the sun. If he sees his shadow? Six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, spring begins.
But we’re not talking about a groundhog from a small town in Pennsylvania who can predict the changing of the seasons.

Rich Elsasser, executive director of the education service center, announced that candidates may file on a board approved form, in person or by mail, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The regular business meeting of the Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department (JCVFD) was held on January 27. President Ray Bible called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m., and a quorum was established. Those present included: Ray Bible, Whitney Liesmann, Sam Richardson, Orlando Ibanez, Chris Welch, Kemp Elliott, Aaron Luedtke, Penny Whisenant, Justin Kohner, and Justin Davis.
Dr. Heidi Abraham, MD, FAEMS, began her medical career as an EMT with a volunteer fire department in Ohio in 2004 or 2005. She was recently appointed the local health authority for Blanco County.
Abraham’s father encouraged her to pursue medical school. Eventually, she followed his advice and attended Wright State University, where she completed her Emergency Medicine residency as chief resident.

The Hill Country Trail Ride gets underway this weekend and will go through Blanco for the 56th year.
The trail ride started with 12 others from across Texas to head into San Antonio to kick off the stock show and rodeo. The trail rides normally kicks off the rodeo riding into the ATT Center, with riders representing each area of Texas.
Jerry Thompson of the Blanco County Friends of the Night Sky (BCFNS) presented a Hill Country Alliance (HCA) certificate in appreciation for the County’s participation in the Hill Country Night Sky Month to Judge Brett Bray and the Blanco County County Commissioners on January 26. Amid an uptick in confirmed positive cases of COVID in the LBJ High School population administrators closed the campus last week and placed all students in remote instruction. All sports contests were put on hold and according to District 29-2A procedures only Varsity contests were rescheduled. The Varsity Eagles made the most of their missed opportunity with a 50-29 drubbing of the Junction Eagles Monday night.

Yvonne Grace Wegenhoft Leonard, 88, passed peacefully with her daughter Janice Fox, by her side, surrounded by love and prayers from her family, in Johnson City, Texas. She went to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, January 27, 2021. Yvonne was born on June 22, 1932, in Rock Island, Texas.
Yvonne, affectionately known as “Danny” was a pioneer for change when women’s roles were evolving, and she did it with grace by supporting family values and honoring traditional roles.

Donald Dale Linder entered the gates of heaven on January 29, 2021, surrounded by those that loved him most. He was born in Austin, Texas on January 14, 1944 to parents Dale and Isabelle Linder. He was a loving husband to Virginia Lee Joy, the love of his life. On February 1, they would have shared their 58th wedding anniversary.
