On Sunday, the rebuilt sign welcoming visitors to Blanco County and proclaiming it the home of President Lyndon B. Johnson was installed at the intersection of RR165 and RR2325. On hand at the installation on Sunday were Bernard Mollberg, local coordinator and facilitator of the project; Art Brooks, master carpenter; and Adrian Landon Brooks, the muralist who painted the sign. “We have been delighted with the local support of this project,” Mollberg said.
The Blanco County Commissioners breezed through its light agenda in approximately 15 minutes Tuesday morning. The commissioners approved an agreement to borrow $541,942 from Government Capital Corporation to purchase equipment and various services. The agreement sets the interest rate at 2.897 percent, and payments of $280,677.17 will be made in June 2022 and June 2023. President David O’Bannon called the Regular meeting of NBCEMS (ESD 1) to order at 7:00 pm on September 20th, and a quorum was established. There were no public comments. Approval of budgets and tax rate Budgets for 2021-2022 were reviewed, discussed, and approved. O’Bannon reported that the JCVFD Budget is $189,750, and the budget for RMVFD is $81,300.
JCVFD President Ray Bible called the September Regular meeting to order on September 8th at 6:03 pm, and there were no public comments. Those present included: President, Ray Bible; Justin Davis; Hunter Jenkins; Aiden Greene; Tom Monaghan; Penny Whisenant; Sam Richardson; Assistant Chief, Danny Alba; Captain and Vice President, Kemp Elliott; and Chief, Whitney Liesmann.
The 3-1/2-hour trip south did not produce a road-weary Eagle team as they shook off any ill effects of the mileage by shaking down the Freer Buckaroos 34-19 on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Eagles closed out the non-district portion of the 2021 season with a 4-1 record. Cade Boyer amassed 287 yards on 158 yards passing with two touchdowns and 129 yards rushing with one touchdown.
The LBJ Middle School Eagles lost at Austin-Regents School 19-13 on Thursday. The two teams ended the first three quarters deadlocked (0-0, 6-6, 13-13), but the Knights got the last word scoring in the fourth and holding on for the win. “These guys continue to improve every week,” according to Coach Ryan Knostman. For the fourth match in a row the Lady Eagles blanked a District 29-2A opponent winning in straight sets on Friday at Junction. The Lady Eagles played an incredibly fast paced game to raise their record to 5-0 in district play. Anna Craig set the tone for the match with a six point service run and the Lady Eagles took the first set 25-10.
The Eagle and Lady Eagle Cross Country teams took a peek at the course that will host the top runners from across the State in November when they raced in the Round Rock McNeil Invitational last weekend at Old Settlers Park. On Friday, Jackie Earley paced the Lady Eagles with an 8th place finish and medal-winning time of 13.21 in the 1A-3A Varsity Girls’ 2-Mile.
Charles Wesley “Wes” Waugh, 69, “Seadog” to the many that knew and loved him, left us to be with the Lord following a sudden illness Sept. 24, 2021. He was born Nov. 23, 1951 in Espanola, New Mexico on the Indian Reservation. Wes was a proud Vietnam Veteran and Navy man.
Steven Henderson “Hondo” passed away unexpectedly Sept. 12, 2021, at the age of 69, at his home in Round Mountain. He was born of Dec. 10, 1951, in Fairborn, Ohio to Jack Jasper Henderson and Mary Lou Burleson Henderson. He graduated from the University of Texas and served his country in the U.S.
