On July 24, 1849, the “Mormons” had been in the Salt Lake valley two years to the day. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were finally free from years of mobbing and persecution. That called for a great celebration.
A few years earlier after mobs had driven “the Saints” from their homes in Missouri, their leader, Joseph Smith, sought redress from the judges, the governor and then from the President of the United States.
It was the finest management training I ever completed. All the principles taught were taught in a useful, meaningful context. Oh, I had attended multiple management conferences taught by PhDs who had come from afar carrying briefcases. Each came from a top-notch university or from some big-name corporation. But this beat them all.
“Dad,” said the voice over the phone, “I need your help to write a paper about the ‘Old West.’”
My daughter, Tara, in order to improve her lot in life, had gone back to school at age 34. Because of my love for all things ‘western’, I took on the challenge.
The army of the American colonies, of which George Washington had recently assumed command, was pathetic. The soldiers, for the most part, were armed with their own weapons and were without uniforms. They were ill prepared for the harsh realities of the winter of 1775-76. It was not unusual for sentries to freeze to death at their posts.
Most of the recruits at that time were from New England.
In Luke 2:7 we read “And she brought forth her first born son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger…” Later, when an angel announced the birth of Jesus he declared, “This shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.” Why was reference made twice in Luke 2 to His being wrapped in swaddling clothes?

However, some churches skip special events altogether on that day believing that “every day is a ...
Back in the 1970’s I had a friend who worked at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. He was some kind of computer guru. He had top secret security clearance. He wouldn’t discuss his work other than to tell me that he could see a battle field from any angle including from the vantage point of the enemy.
I Made a Difference for That One!
I think many of us have heard the story about the man who encountered a little boy while walking along the seashore. The boy was picking up starfish that he found stranded on the beach and was throwing them back into the ocean one at a time.
I’ve always been a shovel kind of guy as opposed to a mustard seed guy. Yes, mountains can be moved, but somebody has to get off his duff, grab a shovel and start digging. So, why is it, you might ask, that I believe in the authenticity of livestock faith-healers. I have no firsthand knowledge of the practice. However, I’m convinced of the sincerity and honesty of the ones who do, some of whom I’ve known many, many years. Then, the most compelling factor is when humans are tak ...
