Did you know that County Historical Commissions are involved in more than the preservation of sites, structures, and recording the history of a county. In recent years, we have learned that our landscape is historical. The definition below explains: A cultural landscape is defined by the National Park Service as a geographic area (including both cultural and natural resources and the wildlife or domestic animals therein), associated with a historic event, activity, or person or exhibiting o ...

For the 2018 award period, HCM was one of 452 hospitals that have met the highest standards for obstetrics in the nation. “We are honored to have consistently received this recognition for obstetric care,” said HCM CEO Jayne Pope.
When President George H. W. and Barbara Bush came to Fredericksburg on March 3, 1993 we were told not to get too excited about it. We would see them in passing, for a few seconds at most, from the neck up, in the backseat of a limo. Getting up close and personal with the former President and First Lady was out of the question.
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Hall of Fame recently announced the induction of Blanco native Leon Coffee. Coffee is one of 10 Class of 2018 inductees. As a PRCA gold card member and National Finals Rodeo (NFR) barrelman, Coffee has enjoyed a long career in ProRodeo as one of only three cowboys to be both a barrelman and a bullfighter, according to the PRCA. Since 1973, this Texas cowboy has fought bulls at the NFR twice (1979, 1984) and was a barrelman at the NFR in 19 ...

The book, “Seasons of Selah, The Legacy of the Bamberger Ranch Preserve” is a coffee table photography book published by Texas A&M University. The book makes its debut at the annual Selah!
Hill Country Memorial has issued a call for former patients and their family members to serve on its Patient & Family Advisory Council. “We are looking for people who have ideas on how we can improve to better serve patients and families,” said Mandy Schmidt, HCM social worker, case manager and council leader.
Democratic candidates for US Congressional District 21 met in a candidate forum in Johnson City on Sunday night. Joseph Kopser is an entrepreneur and former Army Ranger. Mary Wilson is a minister and social justice advocate. Both call themselves community leaders and have taught at the college level. They came out of a four-way Democratic primary race with Wilson taking 31 percent of the vote and Kopser 29 percent.

The Blanco Association of Retired Educator (BCARE) met in February at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church for a business meeting and a superb program presented by Connie Barron. Barrron, who teaches Tai Chi at Gem of the Hills, gave a brief history of the Eastern art which is now prescribed by Western physicians. Tai Chi is excellent for balance, lower body strength, range of motion, and cardiovascular issues, including high blood pressure.
Mark Twain’s book Roughing It paints an ugly picture of travel by stagecoach. The ride was bumpy, dusty and claustrophobic. Passengers had no time to relax and enjoy the scenery. They were too busy holding on for dear life. Every bump in the road was a jolt to the kidneys. Riding on the tailgate of a pickup across a plowed field comes to mind. Stagecoach companies made little effort to accommodate passengers.
