It is God's desire for every believer to grow in Grace and Knowledge of His Son Jesus Christ, and to become a mature believer. God has given us the means to fulfill this objective, by giving us the completed canon of Scripture, the Bible, and the permanent indwelling of God the Holy Spirit (John 14:16) However, the power of the Holy Spirit residing in each believer is potential - depending on whether or not the believer is filled with the Holy Spirit.
On January 6, 2016, I began a 40 day fast because I wanted to get God’s attention about some things that were troubling me. My former pastor suggested I do this until I get a clear word from the Lord. (Please read part 1 by going here: www.bit.ly/LongFast) Jonathan Edwards (1703 – 1758) wrote, “Under special difficulties...
You know the old saying: Don’t Squat With Your Spurs On. Good advice. Here’s another version: Watch Where You Squat. Because they’re everywhere. Fire ants. And are they ever. On fire, that is. Anyone who’s personally encountered them knows what I mean. They move fast as fleas. And are about the same size. And the pain they inflict can surpass other bites and stings. Maybe that’s because they bite you first and then sting. If you just arrived on Planet Earth, North America, Texas, Maso ...

Mini Meat Loaves Regretfully, I have been a bit under the weather the last month and have unable to do my editorial but hopefully that’s behind me. This week’s recipe comes from my “other mother,” Betty Stockbridge that raised me and put up with me for the last 34 years. She has a lot of scrumptious recipes she has shared with me, through the years.
Peace Beyond Understanding... Only God could create a character like the late Hal Rowe. During his 72-year earthly pilgrimage, his specialty was constantly helping others, always making them smile. Consider his bungled marriage proposal to Joyce. She accepted--IF he’d place the ring on her OTHER hand. He blamed inexperience, asking, “Do you want to marry a 210-pound football player or a 130-pound poet?” The two would share life’s “thick and thin” journey for a half-century. Much of ...
Having children doesn’t come with a manual. Nor, does it come with any guaranties! Mostly, you just have to wing it, and hope it comes out okay. Raising children is a cycle learned from one parent to the next parent. I thought at times my parents were “Old fogies!” That they didn’t know what was happening in the world.
One time, up in South Dakota, I got mauled by a grizzly bear. No, wait, that was Hugh Glass. I keep getting that mixed up, since I saw a grizzly bear once, which is pretty close to what happened to Hugh. It’s easy to see how I get the two stories confused. For some reason no one ever made a movie about me, but there have been at least two movies made about Hugh.

Trying To Remember Everyone... The Spring Visitors' Guide made it out on the streets in last week's edition. As much editing and proofreading as we do, there are always going to be things that slip through the cracks. The very first thing that we actually found, after it was too late to correct it, was that the continuation prompt for the Anna Martin story on page 9 directs readers to page 10.
Give the Man a Break I have listened, ad nauseum, to the media’s discussion about how Jordan Spieth gave away The Master’s tournament. Good grief! Can anyone even begin to put themselves in that young man’s cleats? On an exponentially lower level, I have. The first time I stepped into the competitive golf arena was 2003 in Odessa, Texas.
Tax Freedom Day, which typically occurs in late April, according to the Tax Foundation, is the day when the nation as a whole has earned enough money to pay off its total tax bill for the year. So you may want to use this opportunity to determine if you can liberate yourself from some investment-related taxes in the future. Actually, Tax Freedom Day is something of a fiction, in practical terms, because most people pay their taxes throughout the year via payroll deductions.
