An open casting call for extras will be held Aug. 6 for the web television pilot of Freedom on Trial, which will be filmed in Llano. The casting call will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lantex Theater at 113 W. Main Street in Llano. The casting call will consist of a brief talk and photo with a member of the casting or production team.
The Llano Commissioners Court reaffirmed its rules of procedure and conduct at a quick meeting Monday morning. County Judge Mary Cunningham said the procedures have not been followed as closely as they should have been lately, and said the rules will be followed from this point forward. “The reason I wanted to bring this up is that I have been a little confused, I think, and have depended on the prior pattern and practice of the court, which has been to let people speak on the items that were ...
Residents are invited to “back the blue” at the start of the Aug. 1 Llano city council meeting. Councilor Gail Lang has prepared a short presentation to honor the city’s police officers near the start of the meeting. The public is invited to attend the presentation, which will be held in the first few minutes of the meeting, which starts at 5:30 p.m.
A Kingsland woman was convicted in the death of her husband after a more than week-long trial that ended late Monday night in the Llano County Courthouse. Kathryn Louise Preston, 47, was sentenced to 45 years in prison and a $10,000 fine in the Aug. 26, 2014, murder of her husband, 23-year old Jose Mario Hernandez.
Parker Parrish makes a jump during summer Football Camp on Monday.
Scott Edmonson spent his first day as city manager of Mertzon in the sludge pit. While he hopes he doesn’t have a repeat performance Monday as he opens his tenure as Llano’s city manager, that kind of varied experience is just what he hopes will lead to a success at his new job. “I just think there are going to be a lot of different issues that come up,” he said.
Although the summer heat has dwindled its numbers from its large opening weekend in May, the Llano Farmers’ market is growing. Jannie Vaught, who co-founded the local farmers’ market five years ago with Dorris Messer, said that many producers are phasing out for the summer. However, the weekly farmers’ market has grown leaps and bounds since it started out at the library. “The first couple months were really big,” she said of this year’s market. The farmers’ market moved to its cu ...
One hundred and thirty-two years ago, after looking around Texas for just the right spot, the Freeman family of Louisiana found what they were looking for in Llano County. Through the sweat and hard work of generations past, that original country has grown exponentially into the large swath of land in north Llano County commonly known as the Freeman Ranch.
The meat judging program in Llano has had more than its share of success over the years. The 2016 team qualified for the Western National Roundup to be held in January in Denver, Colo., joining a long line of its predecessors that have qualified for national competitions. In fact, Llano has qualified for a national FFA or 4-H event in 10 of the 16 years that Joe Dan Tarter has been coaching. “Good kids, good kids,” Tarter said when asked why the program has been able to compete at a h ...
DALLAS — I’m not sure how many times a Texas football preview story begins with: “Horns Get a Kicker!” This one does, because it was recently announced that Trent Domingue (13-17 FGs) was leaving LSU to spend his fifth year in Austin. The Tigers decided not to re-up Domingue’s scholarship, so Charlie Strong said, “We’ll ‘foot’ the bill!” Or something similar. UT’s 2015 lack-of-athletes’ feats began with a missed extra point by then-senior Nick Rose, denying Texas a 45-45 ...
Two of Llano High’s finest track and field athletes will compete in Houston, Aug. 1-5, in the AAU National Junior Olympics. Wyatt Casey, who graduated in May, will run the 800 meters in the 17-18 age group, while sophomore Courtney Reina will throw the shot put and discus. She’s among the 15-16-year-olds. “It was a big confidence boost,” Casey said of his two-minute time in the 800 in the qualifying meet in San Antonio.
Rest? You’re lucky if both eyes are allowed to blink. Your challenge is merely facing 60-70 offensive plays a game and guys who’ve been throwing the ball since Pop Warner was known as Kid Warner. Cohen Cockburn of Lampasas was tossing it 60 yards in 7-on-7. And the streaking receivers are asking, “Why did the flight last so long?” “Three steps and {they} throw,” lamented Llano defensive coordinator Clint Easley.
If this had been billed as a five-year plan, this is the season for the granddaddy, the Highest Five — Craig Slaughter enters his fifth campaign as the Llano High head football coach. He’s also offensive coordinator. I know you’ve heard this line before, so let’s just admit plagiarism and be done with it: “Llano will be great again.” My claim, and “great” may be a tad strong, but you face a problem plagiarizing if you mess up the original sentence. “Can’t wait,” says Slaug ...
Bennetta Jane Sachse Davis, 84, passed away on July 22 at 9:02 p.m. in Pontotoc, Texas. Bennetta was like no other. She was a very special one-of-a-kind woman. She loved being a homebody and help meet to her husband, Gerald Preston Davis, whom she was married to for 32 years.
Tommy Earl Burke passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at the age of 72. He was born March 25, 1944 to Mercelle (Alexander) and Thurman G. Burke in Llano. Many of his friends have made the comment that when they were growing up Tommy always had a cool car and many reminiscent about the “racing” years.
With all the horrid headlines that we read these days, it was a privilege to ride along with one of the six deputies that patrol our streets at night in Llano County while the rest of us peacefully sleep. Mostly I prayed and held on for dear life. I prayed for the six deputies with each call that came through the radio -- and for our safety when we had to respond very quickly.
