Texas Secretary of State Carlos H. Cascos reminded Texans that voters who cannot obtain a form of approved photo ID now have additional options when voting in person. These additional options apply to current and upcoming school tax elections and the November General Election. “Currently, Texas voters who cannot obtain one of the seven forms of approved photo ID have additional options when casting their ballots,” said Cascos.
Webster’s defines hodgepodge as a mixture of different things. At the John L. Kuykendall Event Center this weekend it was just that as the HodgePodge Market came to Llano for the second time this year. It was put together by Ray Craig, manager of the event center, and Dana Wood, promoter of the event. “This one is so much larger than the last one, I am excited,” said Wood as she greeted guests to the show on Saturday morning. Among the vendors, who came from all areas of Texas, was Shakey ...

New LES principal believes in ‘people before paperwork’
Spend five minutes with Llano Elementary School Principal Doug DeBord, and you’ll soon realize that for him, it really is all about the kids. The 2016-17 school year will be his first as the head of LES, but he spent last year getting to know the students and faculty as the assistant principal. Having transferred from Fredricksburg, DeBord chose Llano because, “There is something to be said about the people of a small town.
District Attorney Wiley B. “Sonny” McAfee requested a Texas Attorney General opinion last week on several issues related to voting. McAfee, who represents Llano, Burnet, Blanco and San Saba counties, wrote to Attorney General Ken Paxton on Aug. 31. The three questions asked concerned the storage of an image of a ballot by electronic voting systems, the requirement of election judges to tally votes and return them to county elections officers, and what remedies are available if an elections ...
Talks began in March about bringing different types of entertainment to Llano, a meeting with a musical promoter out of Austin between the Llano Chamber of Commerce, the Llano Community Center Board, the Christmas Lighting Committee and the JLK Arena. What came out of that meeting was entertainment is expensive, but there was a void in Llano of a variety of entertainment options. Burnet and Marble Falls have Summer Lawn Concerts, and Cherokee has its music festival.
The Llano Youth Football and Cheer teams hosted their first games of the season at Jacket Stadium this past Saturday as both football teams played the Comfort Bobcats. It was a great day for the Jackets, as both teams remained undefeated on the season as each earned hard fought victories over the Bobcats.
The Llano Freshman and Junior Varsity teams battled the Sonora Broncos this past week with the freshman coming out with an impressive victory. Llano continues non-district play this Thursday at Brady to take on the Bulldogs. The freshmen take on Brady at 5 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium, while the JV plays the Bulldogs directly after the freshman game at 6:15 p.m.
Kendal Wenzil, right, slams it home in JV Volleyball action last Tuesday. Llano won in two games against Bandera.
Thursday afternoon saw the skies open up, dumping an inch and a quarter of rain on Llano in a matter of 30 minutes, then a steady, light rain for an hour. Lightening that accompanied the rain caused a 30-minute delay in the start of freshman and JV Games at Llano Yellow Jacket Stadium. The Llano junior varsity Jackets came out fast and strong once the game got underway.
One of my favorite recurring themes — themes, not dreams — is when the baseball playoffs should begin. And, since it is now, here I go. Postseason should start around Labor Day instead of October. That means it ends maybe before October and, oh, by the way, that traditional baseball month: November. Why end the regular season earlier? One huge reason is college football and the NFL are just kicking off, so, whereas, there ...
Kicking off the college football season, wondering if the Big 12 is good enough for Houston. And also being very candid: you’ve read some of this before, but it’s all still going on, so give me one more chance, and I won’t bother you again till Thanksgiving falls on Wednesday. Other reactions: I thought that 109-yard, 34-inch missedfield goal runback by the Cougars’ Brandon Wilson was a Play of the Year candidate — before Labor Day!
On December 29, 2014, I made one of my all-time pronouncements, and that says a lot. It was during the closing seconds of the Texas Bowl, and a sophomore quarterback threw an interception against Arkansas. It was hardly critical with Texas trailing 31-7. The Longhorns had entered the meaningless drive with something like 50 yards total offense. Lake Travis gets that before the National Anthem. Watching on TV, I turned to my son-in-law, John, an avid Longh ...
SONORA — It was a daffy football game. It was like reading a mystery novel, when, all of a sudden, someone is introduced, and he climbs mountains. Or is a ventriloquist. Kinda like that. We can tell you the Jackets fought back from injuries and bizarre miscues, while the Bronco quarterback produced a play which combined inspiration from Houdini and Sammy Baugh. And Sonora withstood a brilliant rushing night from Mason Green ...

Dear Editor, The Llano News article “Setting the record straight” on the HISTORY page, dated August 17, 2016 stated,”People incorrectly think Llano County was created out of Gillespie County, but in reality, it was attached to Bexar County until officially created February 1, 1856.” The history of Bexar District and the creation of Gillespie, Llano and Mason County is a little complex, but the statement that people “incorrectly” think that Llano County was created out of Gillespie C ...
Dear Editor, In the coming week the Llano County Commissioners are going to vote on a new Library System Director. There is only one person in the fray and that is Tommi Myers. She has put 17 years into this system, which she knows inside and out. It would take a book to list all the programs she has added to the library. If the object is to find a person with a vast amount of experience and the ability to get along with people, the choice is clear: Tommi Myers. I urge you to contact your commi ...
