Carter was ‘Crusty enough to live on the tundra’
Not many folks can say they lived in Alaska, and even fewer can say they did lived there as a woman alone for eight years. But that is exactly what Llano local, Eva Carter did from 1988 to 1996. Carter went up to visit her brother in Fairbanks, Alaska, for the Christmas holidays and realized she could make a lot more money than she could ever hope to in Texas. “I went up there with a single suitcase for a short visit that turned into an eight-year stay,” remembers Carter. Finding a job wasn ...

COMFORT — A couple of Llano youngsters, used to being placed at the end of the line, because of the choice — a few years ago — of the spelling of their last names, shook off that minor problem and had superb performances at the Octoberfest Cross Country Meet here on the opening day of—what else? — October. Meredith Zyetz and Andy Wright were a lot closer to the front of the pack than the Z and W are to theirs — or  ...
The principal did push-ups. The Llano student section, led by five boys — naked except for shorts and white, orange, and black paint — was making so much noise you’d have thought it was a packed house. The team and coach saluted the crowd at game’s end. Oh, another 3-0 sweep, against Taylor, on the last night of September. Such is the happy state of LHS volleyball — the new in-sport — where the Ladies are 4-2 in 19-4A and tied ...
Craig Slaughter will coach another couple of decades or so. He will be involved in playoff games, maybe a state championship. But no matter the strategy he employs; the decisions he makes on third down; the play-call in the last two minutes of a 20-20 game — he will never do a better job on a gridiron than he did September 29 at Nelson Field in Austin. That’s because, against Eastside Memorial, his conscience, not his playbook ...

In the 1840s many people left Germany to find freedom in the United States. The small rural community of Castell, named for Count Von Castell, one of the German noblemen who as ...

Dear Editor, I recently moved to Llano County and visit Llano frequently to be with life-long friends. I always go by the “old jail” and marvel at this old building. I always think of Mr. Frank Hamer, the most famous Texas Ranger that ever served Texas. I can’t help but wonder why the people of Llano have not claimed him as one of their own?
