December 14, 2016 Issue

Dr. David Hoerster recently told my sister that her husband was currently his oldest patient. That man is Olvis Osbourn, and on Nov. 26, 2016, he celebrated his 95th birthday. Family and friends gathered at the Llano Church of Christ annex to express their love and appreciation for the honoree. A large crowd assembled on a come and go basis to offer congratulations and to share fond memories.
All but one local municipality posted increases in sales tax revenues distributed in December 2016 over receipts received in December 2015. Only the City of Llano showed a monthly dip, receiving $84,748 in sales tax distributions this month, down 1 percent over the $85,610 it received in December 2015. But through the first 11 months of this calendar year, Llano has received $1,030,241 in sales tax allocations, up 6.15 percent over the same period last year. All other area municipalities’ sal ...

The 20th annual Llano Christmas Stroll got off to a great start at the Courthouse Gazebo on Wednesday night.
The Long Shadow of Infamy
FREDERICKSBURG — On this Day of Prayer, the Day the Bible says, “God rested.” Americans did not have time to pray, and the Japanese did not rest. It was tragic beyond comprehension. It was a horrific shock. The U.S.S. Arizona, Oklahoma, California, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Tennessee: names of these states and others were on ships and lined up on an island that would become — but was not yet — a state, itself.
Santa and Mrs. Claus brighten the night at Starry Starry Nights
Most Friday and Saturday nights in December, Santa Claus, of the North Pole, takes time out of his busy pre-Christmas schedule to stop by Badu Park in Llano as the guest of honor at Starry Starry Nights. This year marks Santa’s seventh year in a row, and, as usual, he brought his wife Carol Claus with him to help keep track of the many requests from the good girls and boys of Llano. “The best part is when I first step off the fire truck,” said Santa, “and all the little ones come runnin ...
Officials with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality told those seeking funds from a one-time grant to “think big.” Ron Anderson, the county’s assistant director for emergency management, did just that, and the county received a hefty reward through its Local Emergency Planning Committee. The county was awarded over $92,000 in grant funds for emergency management projects, Anderson told commissioners at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. “This was a one-time opportunity tha ...
Bobby Bollier and Shaylee DuBose have fun going down the slide at Snow Day, held Saturday at Badu Park in Llano.
Here are a few things over which you can muddle and see if you think I’m in the mud — which is possible. ‘Call a T-O, Baby!’ Those TV timeouts in football and basketball truly change the game. Coaches don’t need to use their timeouts when television is going to award freebees, so they have 3-5 left for the end of the game. Another complaint I have with those TO’s.
HAMILTON — This might be the name of a very successful Broadway show, but the high school didn’t offer Llano’s boys’ team any rave reviews in the Ted Jones Memorial Tournament, December 8-10. The Jackets — winless this autumn — came close twice but lost contests with Dublin, Brownwood, and Brady. Michael Lockhart put in 25 points against Dublin, but the Lions recorded NBA numbers and whipped Llano, 99-60. In Game ...
I like to read The Dallas Morning News especially after a Cowboys’, Mavericks’, Stars’, or Rangers’ loss. Boy, those guys mean business — the sports columnists, I mean. Man, if they wrote like that here, we’d better be ready to pay overtime to lawmen to guard the newspaper office doors. You’d think those big-city writers would have their hands full with “The glass is two-thirds empty” Mavericks. But not on Monday morn ...
Katie McDonough battles to shoot at Salado. That eagle shouldn’t be in such a nasty mood, as Salado — the Eagles, of course — won, 53-35, in the district opener.

She is in heaven now with her parents John and Earline Lowe and her bubba. She left behind two daughters, Cherry Quintanilla and Roslyn Valdez; eight grandchildren, Axl, Azi, Oddyssey, Mike, Jacklyn, Donovan, Sean and Peyton. She called all the grandsons her Tallies and they called her Nanners. She also left behind a sister, Laurie Tristan and her husband and their three girls, Erin, Bianca and her husband, and Kristen with her husband and two ...
