A pair from Llano won big at the American Chuck Wagon Association championship cook-off held March 31-April 1 in Fredericksburg. J Diamond B owned by Bobby and JoAnne Mims of Llano competed and placed in several categories. They finished second for their 1897 Newton chuck wagon. In the foot categories, the won first place in dessert, third in potatoes and fifth in meat and bread.
Congressman Mike Conaway answered a variety of questions at a mildly contentious town hall meeting with constituents April 11 in Llano.
Conaway met with constituents for just under an hour and a half at the family life center at Lutie Watkins Memorial United Methodist Church.
In an opening statement, Conaway said health care is a “work in progress.” He said he was still committed to repeal some pieces of Obamacare, while leaving some part of it in place.
Sunday morning, Easter, the holiest day for the Christian faith, the day the resurrected Christ is celebrated throughout the world. In Llano, the morning starts early with the Llano Ministerial Alliance conducting the annual “Sunrise Service.”
Members from many Christian faiths joined as one to share in the Easter celebration and the fact that the Lord has risen and is alive.
The Llano High School Student Council has been recognized by the Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) as an “Outstanding Student Council;” TASC has 1,269 member schools. Of those, Llano High School is one of only 314 student councils statewide to receive this highly-esteemed honor. The student council was named to the honor for “outstanding achievement in leadership, service and activities that serve to improve the school and community.”

Llano ISD welcomed its new superintendent at Monday’s board of trustees meeting. Mac Edwards, who was officially hired last week, was welcomed at Monday’s meeting. He comes to Llano from Paradise ISD, where he also served as superintendent. Edwards will begin his duties in Llano this summer.
Dean Sharp provided an update on the school district’s bond program.
The county will go without a director of its library system as the county commissioners voted to eliminate the position at a special-called meeting Monday morning.
The position has been unoccupied since Jackie Cundieff’s resignation became official this month. She was appointed to the position in September to replace long-time director Dian Ray.

Nitajean (Nita) Cunningham, age 77 of Kingsland, Texas joined her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 9, 2017 surrounded by family, holding her husband’s hand of 58 years. She was born June 9, 1939 in Atlanta, Texas to Charles Lonzo Ashby and Juanita O’Rear Ashby and was the oldest of five children.

Joy Laverne Lockhart Kuhn Eastman was born in Llano, Texas to John and Izella Lockhart, on June 23,1936. She was one of 11 children. She walked to school in Lone Grove and chopped cedar from a young age. She married early and had five children. Two of the children died young.
The first baseman was wearing number 42. So was the catcher and pitcher. All the Oakland Athletics were, and so were their opponents, the Astros.
42 was the only number across the landscape of the Major Leagues, April 15, because 70 years before, on that day, Jackie Robinson wore 42 and became the first African-American to play ball in the majors.
