Llano County is honored to have a large number of men who qualify as Texas Rangers. A few were in regular Ranger companies under such notables as Capt. John Coffee (Jack) Hayes, J. Gillespie, Sul Ross, Alexander (Buck) Roberts, and Daniel F. Roberts. Many of the earliest settlers in this area served under Capt.
Coming to Llano for the second time in less than a year, the Eagles Tribute Band, Already Gone, performed at the Lantex Theater on Saturday night to a packed crowd. The band from Houston has a huge following, with close to 50 coming from their hometown, along with folks from Hutchison, Kan., Lubbock, Austin, and of course Llano.
The City of Llano got a clean audit for the previous fiscal year during Monday’s regularly scheduled council meeting. Keith Neffendorff, of Neffendorff and Knopp company, told the council he gave them a clean opinion, which is “the best you can get.” He said the city’s financial statements were presented fairly for the 2015-16 fiscal year, which ended Sept.
The splash pad at Badu Park is well underway. The plumbing has been installed and is in the ground. If all goes according to plan, it will be open in June. The splash pad is a long way from its humble beginnings as an idea of local citizens, who formed the Llano Parks Project to accomplish the feat.
This is one of two medals Ray Dixon received at the Region III Track & Field Meet in Huntsville. He won a gold and silver.
In 2014, Llano County Precinct 1 commissioner Peter Jones became concerned about the litter building up along the county roads and spearheaded a program to get it under control. That is how the adopt-a-road program started in Llano County, by the commissioners court. “The Llano County Adopt-a-County Road Program was established to maintain the natural beauty of our county and to decrease the cost of litter pickup,” said Jones. The program is modeled after the statewide Adopt-a-Highway progr ...
Llano’s crumbling streets could get a complete makeover if voters approve a $4.785 million bond measure in Saturday’s municipal election. Also on Saturday’s municipal ballot is a $500,000 bond election to fix the swimming pool and give money to parks, in addition to a local option election which would allow the sale of all alcoholic beverages, including mixed beverages. Early voting ended Tuesday on the three measures on the municipal election ballot.
Members of the Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas fire this cannon during a salute on Saturday to honor 12 Texas Rangers who are buried in Bluffton Cemetery. The event, which honored the Rangers, was put on by the Former Texas Rangers Foundation, Llano County Historical Commission and the Bluffton Cemetery Association.
No one in Texas can beat this man. Not yet. Not in the last year of competing in five bodybuilding events. Ed Thompson of Horseshoe Bay, a young 71 in the 70-79 age group, took the Fifth, April 29, in Arlington, in the Phil Heath Fitness and Bodybuilding Expo. Don’t think he looks like the rest of us in our 70s.
BURNET—The Llano High starting-quarterback contest—battle is too strong a word—has commenced. What has concluded is the search for an offensive coordinator. The two developments became the lead stories, as the 7-on-7 season began on the first night in May on the Bulldog practice fields. Tyler Parr is the new OC, and the 2016 Jacket QB, Ben Walling, will be challenged for his job by last year’s JV quarterback, Cade Fly. “We’re evaluating all the time,” said Head Coach Craig Slaught ...
HUNTSVILLE—A number of Llano High girls and boys, who did not win medals, competed very well at the Region III Track & Field Meet, April 28-29. “I’m excited we did a great job getting here,” said Head Coach Craig Slaughter. “Three seniors—Jason Gann, Stephen Sanderson, and Shane Flint—have been a big part of our program for three years.” Not as long for Avery Tudyk, but, “We are proud of her contributions as well.” Nic George, with the junior varsity when the season bega ...
HUNTSVILLE—It was the greatest triumph of his life—up till now—but it may as well have been in Blanco, Wimberley, or even in Llano. Ray Dixon was so dominant at Sam Houston State that any one of his six shot put aerials—on an overcast morning, April 29—would have beaten the opposition, comprised of the best Class-4A throwers in Region III. Ray’s toss for the official entry was 52 feet, seven inches, but his opening 49-7 would have won gold on this grand stage.
One more World War II veteran has been lost to the ages. Robert Lee Schmidt, age 92, was born on November 11, 1924, and died on April 24, 2017. He was born in Doss, Texas, to Oscar E. Schmidt and Clara Neffendorf Schmidt, the eldest of five siblings. His family moved to Llano where he was raised and attended school.
