Ceremony helps keep legacies alive
Dec. 7, 1941 is a day the American people should never forget, said Harvey Klee. Klee, the former national American Legion chaplain, was the featured speaker at the American Legion Post 370’s Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day event held last Thursday in Llano. It was the 76th anniversary of the Japanese surprise attack in Hawaii that brought about America’s entrance into World War II. “Seventy-six years later, most of the witnesses are no longer with us, but the legacy of the men and wom ...
There will be five competitive races for Llano County offices in the March 2018 Republican Party primary. The deadline to file was Monday. No one filed to run as a Democrat for any Llano County offices. For Llano County Judge, incumbent Mary Cunningham filed to run, as did Ron Cunningham. Mary Cunningham is in her first term in office.
The Llano Country Opry, a second Saturday tradition at the Lantex Theater for 18 years, has had one of its best years ever in 2017. This past Saturday saw a sellout plus during the 2:30 show and just a few seats shy of selling out for the 7:30 show. That is well over 700 people that saw a performance from local musicians, one from Houston, one from Stephenville, and the headliners, that was one for the ages. On the Opry stage for the first time was Llano musician, Matt Hilton, who played on ...
If Uncle Sam wanted you, now Honor Flight Austin does, too. The organization which sends veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit war memorials seeks additional veterans to send to the nation’s capital. The trips are free for veterans and a caregiver. Those who are eligible now include all World War II and Korean War veterans, regardless of where they were stationed, and Vietnam veterans who have received the Vietnam service medal. “If we can find those veterans, we want to take them t ...
In addition to candidates who filed to run for office in Llano County, other candidates will appear on the March 2018 Republican or Democratic primary ballot in the county. For U.S. Representative in District 11, Jennie Lou Leeder of Llano is one of two Democratic candidates on the ballot. The other is Eric Pfalzgraf of Odessa.
1997. Clinton (Bill) was president; 21-year-old Tiger Woods captured The Masters by 12 strokes; Titanic won the Oscar as Best Picture of the Year; and “Love Gets Me Every Time,” by Shania Twain, was one of Country’s biggest hits. And, also 20 years ago, the Llano High football Jackets took their place as one of the all-time great teams in school history.
An NBA schedule was finally put to rest December 11 for the Jacket boys, as they played 10 games in 14 days. Do they need a union? They handled the stretch in respectable fashion, compiling a 4-6 record which included a 47-34 loss at Fredericksburg, December 11. “Got to have a solid week of practice,” declared head coach Chris Armstrong. We wrote about the 2-1 mark at the Thrall tournament last week, so we start this journey at home, December 5, a 61-54 victory over Goldthwaite. “ ...
Was that dodgeball going on out there? Did I drop into the old-man martial arts class by mistake? Girls just refuse to play like the boys, unless we’re talking about the Red Wings and Maple Leafs. Yes, the main subject of our discussion is basketball, but on December 8, the (Lady?) Jackets and Hamilton battled to a draw if there had been a ring set up, but the Bulldogs won the main event, 48-24.
This is a condolence card for Liberty Hill High School, as it appears “No promotion” once again for the Panthers. They are forced to continue to toil in Class 4A. 5A says to them: “Not this time my friends and one more rejection means—similar to baseball’s Hall of Fame—you will have to wait to be admitted on the Old Timers’ ballot.” Here’s the deal: the UIL says the high cutoff for Class 4A is 1,149 students.
Whether you coached a Heisman Trophy Winner as an assistant or a head coach; whether it was in junior high, high school, or college—that is a very big deal, and Llano’s Matt Green and Ryan Priem both had a football role in the career of Baker Mayfield, who claimed the 83rd Heisman Trophy, December 9. Green, the Jackets’ head coach, helped mentor Mayfield, as the Lake Travis offensive coordinator in three of the glory years: 2008, ’09, and ’10.

On Friday, Dec. 8, 2017, at the age of 82, our radiantly beautiful mother took flight with God’s Angels into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and reunited with the love of her life. She is now safely home. No more pain or suffering. At the time of her death, Addie Mae (McKee) White was a resident of Arbor House in Marble Falls, to be nearer her daughters, but called Houston her “home.” Although her husband’s career would take her as far west as the San Francisco Bay area ...

Dear Editor, Thanks to Ted Cruz’ amendment to the tax scam called the Tax Cut and Jobs Act, Texas school funding is set to lose $1,653,683 in the first year, and $16,536,826 over ten years. But no worries, if the tax scam passes, the rich will be able to add TAX FREE money to their 529 plan to fund private school education for their kids by up to $10,000 per year.
Dear Editor, Thank you for keeping the subject of ACD — Anthropogenic (caused by humans) Climate Disruption — in the public eye by publishing, last week, the piece Hemphill: Well, the weather outside is surely frightful by humorist Kendal Hemphill. Personally, I think the possibility exists that we really are inadvertently killing the current configuration of life on this planet.
