Frigid winter weather greeted Llano County as 2018 began.
The high for New Year’s Day was 32 degrees Fahrenheit in Llano, which was 5 degrees below the low on the same day one year ago. The high was 58 and the low was 37 as 2017 greeted Llano, compared to 32 and 23 this year.
Though it was cold Monday, the low of 23 was not a record for that day.
The Llano Chamber of Commerce will hold its 94th annual Community Awards Banquet on Jan. 30, 2018.
Things begin at 5:30 p.m. with a meet and greet, followed by an Italian meal at 6:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will be held at 7:20 p.m.
One change this year is a new award to recognize businesses.
Llano resident James Bond, 92, was recently named the only honorary member of the Highland Lakes Honor Guard. He was presented this honor guard jacket by Charlie Taylor, left, the honor guard commander.
Well the weather outside is frightful, staying in is so delightful. And it snowed in Llano on New Year’s Eve. A blast of frigid air blew in on Sunday causing many to celebrate the beginning of 2018 in the comfort of their own homes.
For those that chose to go out, they were greeted with a dusting of snow around 9 p.m.
BROWNWOOD—On a very cold holiday weekend in the middle of the state, the Jacket boys saw Jumanji and—also on their days off—picked up two wins against two losses in the Lions’ basketball tournament.
“I think we’re a better team {now} than when we played Lampasas, December 19,” said head coach Chris Armstrong.
TROY—The Llano Lady basketball Jackets suffered three pretty aggravating losses in the Troy Christmas Classic, but they also authored one of the best defensive stretches in school history in their victory over Bartlett, December 28.
Actually, I guess it would be the best for a 14 and a half minute span, because the Lassies were held scoreless.

Bob was born at home, in the Pottsville Community of Hamilton County, Texas on Jan. 22, 1934. He was the last child born to Otto Heinrich Karl Goerdel and Hildegarde Maria Marwitz.

Juna, as her sister called her, never liked long goodbyes, so was very ready to say farewell to this life after struggling with Alzheimer’s, the disease that had cramped her style for far too long.
James “Jim” Merkel, 59 passed away comfortably on Dec. 23, 2017 at Baylor Scott and White Hospital, in Round Rock, Texas.
Jim was born on the 4th day of November in 1958. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Jim, knew that he was a kind, loving, and compassionate man who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.
Jim is survived by his only son, James Lloyd Merkel.
On Dec. 29, 2017 Verna Mae Lewis departed this life at her home on Lake Buchanan, surrounded by her children.
She was born May 6, 1929 in Lovell, Wyoming to Ralph Murphy Smith and Marie Margaret (Jensen) Smith. She moved to Southern California as an infant and spent her childhood and most of her adult life there.
Mary Ellen Evans Davis, of Llano, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2017 in Big Lake at the age of 89. She was a lifetime resident of Llano County.
