To most when January arrives, it means cold weather, cleaning up after the holidays and a return to school. But to many of the students, it means stock show month. Llano County 4-Hers got to show what they have been doing for the last year at the annual stock show last week.
Some of the kids like to name their animals, as did Juna Glasscock, who has been in the 4-H program for 11 years.
Three Llano police officers were placed on paid leave Friday, meaning the department is at half strength.
Chief Kevin Ratliff along with officers Aimee Shannon and Jared Latta were placed on leave pending the results of an investigation by the Llano County District Attorney’s Office, according to Llano city manager Scott Edmonson.
Hill Country Memorial will officially join the Llano community with the opening of its immediate care clinic on Monday.
The clinic, at 1310 Ford Street, will be open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“Hill Country Memorial and the HCM Medical Group are excited to serve in the Llano community,” said Clint Kotal, HCM Medical Group Chief Operating Officer.
The City of Llano is set to save a bundle on water and sewer line repair thanks to a pair of low interest loans.
The Texas Water Development Board on Thursday approved loans totaling more than $4.2 million for the city to repair or replace water and sewer lines on Sandstone Street.
It is an annual event that brings the entire community and beyond together, for three days of showing, and a year of preparation.
The Llano County Junior Livestock Show and Art, Craft, and Food Show was held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the John L Kuykendall Event Center and Arena. Kids, parents, grandparents, friends and family are together for these three days, working together to be the best they can be.
Two legends of country music, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn, have wowed audiences for years -- Twitty, before his death, and Lynn, still active today. On Saturday, for two performances at the Lantex Theater, their grandchildren, Tre and Tayla, entertained Llano Country Opry audiences with powerful performances of their respective hits.
Lynn began the show with a number of Loretta’s songs, and her energetic singing mixed with non-stop narrative was a hit with those enjoying the show.
Judicial candidates packed the stage more than once as they spoke at the Llano Tea Party’s candidate forum held this month at the American Legion Hall.
Though they were running for different posts, on most occasions the candidates gave similar answers.
Three candidates are vying for Place 8 on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
Layton Rabb lost one fewer games than Baker Mayfield did in the 2017 season, but they have at least one thing in common: they were both walk-ons, which means nobody wanted them badly enough to give them scholarships.

TAYLOR—Donald Trump was months away from beginning his lengthy run for the presidency—in 2015—when the Llano boys last won a district basketball game. The nasty streak, involving three coaches and more than 30 games, ended January 12, as the Jackets squeezed past the Ducks, 63-61, on a Brooks Keele basket with close to a minute left in the game, and the defense stopped a three-point shooter from scoring with seconds remaining.
TAYLOR—When you’re down by two at the end of three quarters, and you score three times as many field goals as your opponent in the fourth, you’d think you’d get a win. But—when you are as snake-bit as the Lady Jackets, peanut butter and jelly is not even a safe choice.
Ashlyn Collier of the Ducks hit a three-point basket with 19 seconds remaining—the only field goal her squad made in the quarter—and Taylor won, 42-41.
Frederick (Barry) Davis, born July 5, 1939, passed away on Jan. 11, 2018 in Llano. Barry was born and raised in Sacramento, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kay and Chuck Davis. Barry is survived by his wife, Mary Dannelley of Llano; his son, Bob Davis of Weimar, California; his daughter, Jamie Davis of Carrollton; his brother and sister in law, Bruce and Debbie Davis of Lincoln, California; and niece Ellen Hays-Roth of San Francisco, California.

Ms. Cherry Simpson Grant of San Saba, 85, passed away on Jan. 12, 2018, with her children by her side in Austin.
A visitation was held Monday, Jan. 15 at the Heritage Funeral Home in San Saba. Immediately following, family and friends laid Ms. Grant to rest during a grave side service at Llano City Cemetery.
Cherry was born on April 25, 1932 in Brady.

Friends and neighbors, I am on Social Security and Medicare and Paul Ryan and other repugnicans are saying they are going to have to “restructure entitlements” like Social Security and Medicare. They make it sound as if Medicare and Social Security are benefits that we don’t need or that we aren’t “entitled” to; well we paid for them all our lives – we are entitled to them.
Don’t be fooled and let them put ‘their spin’ on it; when they use words such as
