LHS students learn art of being an adult
There are some things in life that we do without even thing about, everyday routines that were learned early in our adult life but had to learn it at some point. Last Thursday, Llano High School juniors and seniors made a trip to the John L Kuykendall Event Center and Arena to learn those very things we take for granted, and maybe, some things us older adults could learn too.
The Llano City Council talked police business in an almost hour-long closed session at its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday. The council met in closed session for 54 minutes for “legal consultation with the city attorney regarding police department operations, staffing and deployment, and related law enforcement matters.” They took no action after returning to open session. The council approved McCall Parkhurst & Horton as bond attorney and Specialized Public Finance as financi ...
Celebrating 19 years is an important thing for any organization and doing that in Llano on Saturday night was the Llano Country Opry, a monthly tradition at the Lantex Theater. This was a special night indeed with not only regional artists, but also one from Peoria, Arizona, making his first appearance on stage in Llano.
You meet the nicest people on the side of the road, sometimes. Lonnie Mason of Lubbock made a visit to Highway 71 and Llano County to paint the countryside and the bluebonnets. His work has an almost-impressionist look.
The Llano County Historical Museum is honored to present a new exhibit on the life of Robert Hunger Jr., DVM, a local veterinary doctor and member of the Llano community for many years. According to a biography provided by the family, Bob’s lifelong profession was fostered by his upbringing on the family sheep and goat ranch on the South Llano River near Junction.
If you can get kids (and their folks) out to the soccer fields on a perfect day for, uh, the slalom, or hockey on the nearest frozen pond, I think you’ve got something going. “They have a ball,” Deana Kenner told me. She’s treasurer of Llano Youth Soccer. More than 200 youngsters—about equally divided between Llano and San Saba counties—come to the pitch on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
BURNET—Who knew? Ray Dixon, one of the best shot putters in the state, has struggled a bit with the shot, but he’s been in much more serious trouble with the discus. Reviewing what happened in 2017: Ray was region champion in the shot, third in state; second in region with the disc, fourth in state. 2018 has included a 54-foot shot-put heave which is maybe two feet shy of what he needs to win 4A state next month.
BURNET—Anna Casey, in her first 19-4A district competition on the track, won two gold medals and a silver to lead five other Jacket runners into the Area round of postseason. “Ran her heart out,” said Lady Jackets’ head coach, Amy Withrow. “She’s passionate—she’s a beast.” That’s positive talk in athletic language. “I got boxed in on the first lap,” Anna told me, after winning the 800 meters.

Arlis Lynel Sims, 78, graduated to her heavenly home from the family home in Kingsland, on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, following a short illness. A native Texan, Arlis was born Sept. 16, 1939, in the panhandle county of Hale, in the Ellen community to parents Cecil and Alice (Gresham) Culp. The only daughter in her family, God blessed Arlis with the same kind of determination her grandfather and grandmother Culp must have had when they emigrated to America from Norway not many decades previo ...
Dear Editor, The Llano Recycling Opportunities lost a valued person on April, 1, 2018 with the passing of Robert Whitaker. We will miss him because of his unique smile when sorting recyclables and pride when giving a high five to signify a job well done. When pausing for a minute, we can honor you with a vision of your being at the sorting table working away. Your co-workers and I had the honor of working side by side with you on a daily basis, thank you.
Dear Editor, The foolish and ridiculous matter of attempting to return to dark skies has caused too many ignorant people in official positions to spend money that should have been spent on vastly more important matters. Specifically, this is frivolously wasting taxpayers money which has become an pandemic in way too many cities. There is much written on this matter that is nothing more than political and intellectually dishonest science by earth worshipers who want our society to move bac ...
