The Commissioners heard from Daniella Scott, Recovery Coordinator, and Jack Doebbler, District Coordinator for the Texas Division of Emergency Management, concerning how FEMA will help Llano County after the flood of October 2018. Scott explained how repairs would be grouped together into projects. Once the projects are formulated according to actual repair costs, FEMA will step in and assign a team to work with Llano officials.
The School Board opened their meeting on April 22 by recognizing two students. Abby Machuga was awarded a Certificate of Bravery for her heroic acts when her house caught fine the morning of March 12. Superintendent Mac Edwards said, “Abby Machuga is a wonderful young woman that has had a tough freshman year.

This past Sunday the world and Llano celebrated Easter—the holiest of holidays in the Christian faith. There is Good Friday, the day Jesus was crucified and died, and then the glorious Sunday morning when He arose from the grave, the Lamb and Savior of the world, claiming victory over death.
We have been busy working on some new strategies in our marketing plan in getting more folks into our shops as well as getting more tourists into town. AUSTIN—After finding more than 18 species of fish during a recent sampling trip on the Llano River, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's Inland Fisheries staff are encouraged to see fish populations rebounding following historic flooding in October 2018.
“In 2018 the Llano River was greatly affected by a 100-year flood that significantly altered its fish habitat,” said John Botros, TPWD River Access Program Coordinator.
On Saturday May 4, the Spring Limited Bulk Collection event will take place at the Llano County Annex located at 8347 RR 1431 (1431 and 29 – Fuzzy’s Corner), celebrating a 9-year effort to create a cleaner, more beautiful environment for all of Llano County.
In 2010, a small group of concerned residents met to discuss the feasibility of a household waste collection event.
The month of April already has been a busy one for the Highland Lakes Democratic Women. On April 10 the Executive Committee held its quarterly meeting at Mojo’s Coffee in Marble Falls. Dr. Jim Rigby, Pastor of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Austin, will be speaking at the Horseshoe Bay Democrats’ monthly meeting at Quail Point, 107 Twilight Lane, in Horseshoe Bay on Monday, April 29 at 4:00 p.m.

John “Johnny” or “JD” Douglas Lucas, 72, of Buchanan Dam, Texas passed away surrounded by his family Wednesday, April 17, 2019.
Johnny was born in Llano on October 28, 1946 to John Wesley Lucas and Olga Dahl Lucas. Johnny attended Llano High School and served in the United States Army from 1966 and was honorably discharged in 1971.
Frank Edward Otto, age 89, passed away peacefully April 19, 2019. Frank was born April 28, 1929 in Castell, TX to Amanda and August Otto. He was the middle child, having 3 older and 4 younger siblings.
Frank proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine in the Korean War. Frank married Marian Holcomb Dec.
Catherine “Diane” Kilman passed away on Wednesday April 3, 2019 in Carrollton, Texas. Diane was one of the most selfless, giving person to all who knew and loved her. She was “Memaw” to her 4 grandchildren whom she loved and treasured dearly. She loved to crochet, cross-stitch, complete word-searches, cook and spend time with her family.
Nancy Rae McCabe passed away on Friday, April 19, 2019 in Lakeway, Texas at the age of 75. She was born on December 21, 1943 to Cecil Standard and Lora (Russell) Standard in McCamey, Texas.
Nancy is preceded by her parents and son, Cecil Bert McCabe.
She is survived by her husband, Billy Bert McCabe; sons, Rusty McCabe, Kevin McCabe and Randy McCabe; sisters, Annette Alexander, Barbara Hendricks and Marcie Phillips; and 4 grandchildren.

John Harold Schuessler, son of John Herman and Ida Wilhelmina Jordan Schuessler, was born on February 24, 1925 and died on April 15, 2019. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, 4 sisters--Frances Mae Schuessler Schmidt, Johnita Pearl Schuessler Bohmfalk, Ruth Alice Schuessler, Virginia Marie Schuessler and 1 granddaughter.
John spent his life as a rancher in Mason County on the Llano River near Castell with his wife of 73 years, Dorothy Bauer Schuessler.
We arrived through another storm with a substantial amount of rain for the garden. The rain has lots of nitrogen from the sky and the growth of the plants is just amazing. Let’s talk about one of my favorites—sweet potatoes. It is a definite regular meal for us. Sweet potatoes are not in the nightshade family as a regular Irish potato.
