Another aspect of the hot summers of yesterday that is less of an issue today deals with hygiene. In fact, hygiene, or the lack thereof, was a big issue year around—it only intensified in the summer months. History shows throughout most of man's time here on earth, up until the last one hundred years or so, human beings actually stunk.
Of all the seasons in the year, summer has to be my favorite. I am reminded of an uncle of mine who, when asked what his favorite piece of pie was, always said, “The one I’m eating at the time.” Maybe I have something of my uncle in me, I do not know.
The scene before me was picturesque: a swiftly flowing river bubbling over and around rocks framed by flowering banks and protruding ledges. I was visiting a natural beauty spot but swirling pools of foam caused by detergent being carelessly drained into the river somewhere upstream made the experience bittersweet. Many years have passed since my journey to that formerly favorite tourist retreat and considering the progress made in cleaning up the environment I suspect the scene has changed to ...
Agencies to take public comment on WIOA State Plan and transition of DARS functions to TWC
AUSTIN − Members of the public are invited to upcoming meetings to be held at seven locations throughout the state to provide input to officials from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) as the agencies prepare a combined state plan for core workforce programs governed by the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The meetings will also provide the public the opportunity to make recommendations related to the ...
FREDERICKSBURG—Chance Craig is leaving nothing to Chance—uh, or maybe everything, and that's just fine. On the Lady Bird Golf Course, July 9, Craig fired a one-under-par 70 and wrapped up a 36-hole victory on the West Texas Junior Champions Tour. He had mastered Schreiner Golf Course in Kerrville with a three-under 67 the day before.
I wrote a scathing indictment of the Home Run Derby several days before the Derby—a draft before my editor sees it—and then I watched the show, July 13. I may not have except that Serena, Jordan, and Novak all had the night off, and I was surprised that the NBA Finals had finished. Well, my "scathes"
There is a lot of excitement about the possibility of Jordan Spieth winning the British Open, July 16-19, and then completing the Grand Slam with a triumph in the PGA Championship in August. Quite understandable with Spieth being only the sixth to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year.
100 yards of dirt never looked so good to the Llano High School Athletic Department and Jacket football fans. What it means is—apparently—there will be no turning back. "This makes it real, that it is happening," insisted Athletic Director and head football coach, Craig Slaughter. Synthetic turf will be the floor of Llano Stadium for the 2015 football campaign.
A lot of us thought each time Holden Simpson came to bat for the Jackets he was going to get a base hit. That, of course, didn't happen, but a ground out or fly ball into the center fielder's glove did not erase the original belief when he next stepped into the batter's box. Soon, Holden will be playing—and attending classes—at Western Texas College in Snyder.
GRANITE SHOALS—If you Googled, "One person who doesn't like Leonel Manzano," you'd be greeted by "No Results Found." The highly-popular, readily available Marble Falls High School graduate (2004), who was silver medalist in the 1500-meter run in the 2012 Olympics—and competed in 2008--helped dedicate a hike and bike trail, May 9, in the community where he was raised. "I want to thank the people of Granite Shoals for the support and motivation they gave me,"
