The History of Texas Cattle is Written in their DNA
When German settlers arrived in Mason County in the 1850s, they found bountiful oak–grassland savannahs occupied by herds of wild, long-horned cattle. After the Civil War ended in 1865, these wild cattle became a key to the settlers’ survival, as the cattle were rounded up and herded to rail heads in Kansas to feed a hungry nation that had been ravaged by war.
