Water is one of our most precious resources. Along with the air we breathe, water is vital to life. Texans have faced recurring periods of drought but working together wisely we can avoid serious water shortages. Simple conservation techniques are some of the most effective yet least expensive solutions.

Mason County Habitat for Humanity, Inc. was formed in October of 2001 by a group of local folks determined to help their neighbors by implementing the Habitat for Humanity mission statement: “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.” Over the next 19 years, lead by presidents including Don Jacques, Jean Dudney, Jan Appleby, Paul Branch and John Olson, Mason Habitat built 19 homes that neighbors who otherwise ...

This past weekend was one of sadness for our community. On Saturday morning there was the funeral for Dewey Stockbridge, a fine young man who was set on a course of living out the very best that our education system and community tries to instill in our children, and who leaves behind a young family as well as parents, relatives, friends and many who knew him as a very fine example of Mason pride and character.
As the Artistic Director of the Mason Chamber Music Festival for four seasons since its creation in 2016, it has been my distinct pleasure to serve. That’s why it’s so difficult to announce to the fine people of Mason today that we have had to officially cancel our fifth season.
Back-to-school plans may look a little different for families across Texas this year, but Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) has resources available to make agricultural education fun whether in the classroom, at the kitchen table or anywhere in between.
“We know not everyone will be going back to the classroom right away this fall.

There are many things that have changed in the last six months due to Covid-19, and those changes will affect the concession stand that the Mason Band Boosters run on Friday nights at home football games. We will still be offering our Puncher fans several yummy options, but we have decided that it is in the best interest of everyone if we are not cooking food in the concession stand this year.
We will still be providing prepackaged snacks and drinks as we always have, but we are currently w ...

I graduated Mason High School in 1978. We had one of the larger groups of students to make their way through the system, and had 52 graduates when we finally walked the stage together and headed out into the world.
Since that time, 42 years ago, our group has lost four classmates.
Dear Editor:
I can understand Will McCann’s frustration with the local people who steal political yard signs, and I’d also like to offer a solution. In 2008, I had seven Obama signs stolen off my gate on Ranch Road 1871. My response was to order a stack of replacement signs, which contributed additional funds to the Obama campaign’s coffers.
Re: Karner/Cordero letters
Communism and Democrats? Please. Look a little closer at our Republican president. A bipartisan report released last Tuesday August 18 by the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee chaired by Marco Rubio lays it on the line. Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign sought and maintained close contacts with Russian government officials who were helping him get elected.
We Are Your Neighbors
While readers may dismiss some letters over the past few weeks as coming from the looney bin, I do not.
Letters equating Democrats with satanic politics (or worse) is quite mainstream and the silence from the local right is deafening. Do you realize that when you condemn Democrats as aligned with Satan that you are talking about people that work in this town, serve you in some way, or live next door to you?
Are there any good decent Republicans in Mason that will c ...
Bubba "Red" Neck is what you might call just one little bubble in the beer foam of life. His chance of being a success has been about the same as that of a red ant at a horned frog convention.
Red has always been unlucky. In fact, if he'd been a dog on Noah's Ark, he would've ended up with both fleas.
Things started going wrong from the get go.

It seems like only yesterday that my friend Roy McQueen thought himself to be “middle-aged.” Oh, he knows that life spans would need to reach three digits for this to be a literal truth.
So, he’s attempting to glide under the radar, figuring that if others don’t bring up the age thing, why should he?
But “others” are….

Assuming we have a decent pecan crop after this drought, it’s always nice to have a few recipes that will take advantage of the bounty, and this is one you’re sure to enjoy.

When German settlers arrived in Mason County in the 1850s, they found bountiful oak–grassland savannahs occupied by herds of wild, long-horned cattle. After the Civil War ended in 1865, these wild cattle became a key to the settlers’ survival, as the cattle were rounded up and herded to rail heads in Kansas to feed a hungry nation that had been ravaged by war.
