Songs of the Summer Dog Days
A recently emergent Dog Day Cicada clings to the remains of its cast exoskeleton.
The ancient Greeks noticed that when the Dog Star Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major, was in the same part of the sky as the Sun, they could expect to experience the hottest days of the year. In this alignment, Sirius (which is the brightest star in the night sky) can be seen briefly just before dawn as a morning star.
