A 15-foot-tall bridge might seem like an improvement over a low-tech, low-water crossing, but not everyone is happy about the planned bridge project at White’s Crossing. “I think the design is a poor compromise between a wider, unobtrusive low-water crossing and a much larger structure,” said Mason County resident Tony Plutino, owner of Llano River Region Adventures.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issues Severe Thunderstorm Warnings (SVRs) when a severe storm is happening or imminent, letting the public know it’s time to act, ideally to take shelter. These warnings are “Impact-Based,” focusing on the expected storm impacts, to allow for more precise communication and recommended actions. To further improve this communication, starting July 28th the NWS will be implementing Damage Threat Categories with all SVRs. These will now be three threa ...
Since the destruction of the Mason County Courthouse in February, the work to restore the structure has proceeded at full speed, including the current investigative and design phase. The work to raise the approximate $4 million dollars needed to supplement the funding for the project has also been moving at a rapid clip, thanks to the enthusiasm and passion of the citizens of Mason County, visitors to the area who have a fondness for the beauty of the Mason Square, and the resourcefulness of ...

Songs of the Summer Dog Days
The ancient Greeks noticed that when the Dog Star Sirius, in the constellation Canis Major, was in the same part of the sky as the Sun, they could expect to experience the hottest days of the year. In this alignment, Sirius (which is the brightest star in the night sky) can be seen briefly just before dawn as a morning star.
The regular monthly City Commission meeting was held on Monday, July 19th at 5:30PM. We had a relatively short meeting, but a productive one. First on the agenda was the request from Mason County Habitat for Humanity for the City to allow them to rent seven RV slots at the City Park in Spring 2022 for a ten week period at a reduced rate beginning on or about February 26th and ending around May 8th.
Fears of Nature are Greatly Exaggerated and Mostly Unfounded

We are deep into summer, and for many of us that means the spring garden is being harvested and preserved. I have replanted a 70-day variety of some sweet corn. Along with this, I planted Red Kuri winter squash with a few small sweet melons. According to the moon calendar, the new moon for July was on the 9th.
