The Board of Trustees of MISD met for their regular meeting on June 25, 2018 at the School Administration Office. Board President Jeff Durst called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm with members Jim Bob Smith, Julio Ramon, Tina Cantu-Navarro, Treg Hudson, Ryan Jordan and Kathryn Martin in attendance.
Coleman, Texas, July 19, 2018 – Jax Tedder, from Mason, Texas, is participating in an extensive, hands-on educational camp on ranching and land stewardship at the Warren Ranch in West Central Texas. Ranch Brigade, now in its sixth year, accepts youth ages 13 to 18 for approximately 25 coveted spots in the program that introduces the young men and women to the broad ranging aspects of operating a modern Texas ranch.
The Mason County 4H Club invites any interested families to learn more about 4H and the programs available to them on Wednesday, August 1st at 5:30 PM and Mason’s Historical Building, 505 Moody St. At 5:30 a hot dog supper will be available as well as booths representing each project available in the Mason County 4H program.
Ms. Wheelchair America Fills a Tall Order Byron Center, MI – July 17, 2018 – The 47th annual Ms. Wheelchair America National Competition will be held in Grand Rapids, MI from July 30 – August 5, 2018 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Throughout the week women, representing states across the country, will be judged based on their ability to make a difference for the more than 56 million Americans living with disabilities.
“Boss” Lion Marty Bentson gaveled to order the weekly meeting of the Mason Lions Club on July 17. Central Texas Electric Cooperative is helping the Hill Country Community Needs Council with their annual school supply drive by serving as a drop off location for donations. “This program ensures that children in grades K-12 will have what they need when they start school,” a spokesman said “Please help us help children in need in our community.” The drive will run until the end of July and supplies can be dropped off at CTEC.
This year we will host a Fundamental basketball camp for 3rd through 8th grade girls & boys. The Fundamental camp will be July 30--August 2 & will be from 1pm to noon. The cost for the Fundamental will be $50 per camper. Checks for the Fundamental Camp should be made out to Jeff Guice.
The Texas Rangers Heritage Center in Fredericksburg honors the Texas Rangers daily with a 12-acre campus located on Hwy 290. On August 4, 2018, they will remember those who have served and honor those still commissioned with a two-part event. Texas Ranger Day & History Symposium will feature historians and educational programs, including Ranger camp set ups and cannon firing.
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks! The Mason County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their annual Softball Classic Tournament at Fort Mason Park baseball fields, August 4, 2018. This is a chance to team up and have fun by participating in an all-American pastime. There are major prizes to be won, including a Home Run Derby cash prize!
Old Yeller Day is just around the corner the way time is flying by. The celebration to be held on Saturday, September 29th, will honor the life of the frontier times and the literary heritage of Mason author Fred Gipson. If you have handcrafted arts/crafts to sell, the celebration is a perfect event for you because booth space if free, so you keep all the proceeds!
The annual meeting of the Long Mountain Cemetery, the Long Mt. Improvement Corp, will conduct their annual meeting Saturday, July 28 at 10 AM at the Long Mt. Center to hold a business session and to elect officers for the FY 2018-2019.
The Heavens Are Telling the Glory of God is the title of a family night community program which will be presented in the auditorium of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Mason on Wednesday, August 1. Pastor Mark Ward, of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Doss and Christ Lutheran Church of Cherry Springs will present the program.
One in 6 children in America face food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as “the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.” According to Feeding America, children in rural and farm communities are more likely to face food insecurity. To help combat hunger in our community, Fontera Healthcare Network will be holding a food drive at the Mason Clinic through the month of July.
The First Baptist Church of Mason will be presenting, “Heaven’s Gates and Hell’s Flames,” a theatrical presentation of the gospel. The cast of the drama is made up of members of the FBC congregation. Last year we presented this same drama, and we had nearly 400 people come to the performances over 3 day.
Join us this Sunday night, July 29th at 6 p.m. at River of Life Church as the churches in the Mason Ministerial Alliance gather to enjoy some great Gospel music together! The Mason Ministerial Alliance is instrumental in serving the needs of our community and seeks to build relationships among the churches for the benefit of the entire county.

Club vice president, Bruce Barton, will present a program on telescope fundamentals - the types, how they work and important things to know about their operation. At their July 23 meeting, the Mason County Commissioners' Court voted unanimously to instate a 90-day burn ban, effective immediately. Walter Kulley, of West, Texas, passed away July 11, 2018 at the age of 80. He was born to parents Benjamin and Josephine Kulley June 29, 1938 in Summit, New Jersey, one of ten children. In 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1958. Walt went on to a 33 year career at IBM which led him to several stops across the country until he finally settled in Texas, which he heartily adopted as his own. Vernon Leroy Gooden went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 13, 2018. Chico, as his family and friends lovingly called him, had a perpetual grin on his face to greet each person he met. His hands were strong with callouses from helping everyone in his path. He knew when something needed to be said and what to say, and he knew when it was best to say nothing at all.

Last week, a reader stopped by to mention to me that there has now been a second incidence in Mason County of a resident developing Chagas disease due to bite and infection from kissing bugs. The other person had their experience last fall, and this second victim had their run-in at the beginning of summer.
