As we all know, time passes quickly. It passes even more quickly when you’re having fun! These past four months, that I have had the wonderful opportunity and privilege of spending at the Mason County Nutrition Program, were not only fast and fun but a touching experience as well. Even though I have only spent a short time as the Nutrition Director, I have made many lasting memories and friendships and have been blessed by spending time with some of our community’s most remarkable members ...
FOUR QUESTIONS: At our special City Commission and Planning and Zoning Workshop Monday, Feb 4th, we had an exceptionally well prepared and presented slide show by Dr. Michael Murphy, retired professor from the College of Architecture at Texas A&M. This, I believe, was a great way to introduce some overall considerations to planning for Mason’s future, which includes first agreeing on a general plan for the future development of our special and unique town.
Lion “Boss” Marty Bentson opened the February 4 meeting of the Mason Lion’s Club with a request for the invocation followed by a group Pledge of Allegiance to both flags and concluded with a singing of the song “America”. Since the scheduled speaker was sidelined with the flu Lion Michael Murphy rose to the occasion by gallantly coming forward and agreeing to discuss the recent City Commission call for revisions and updating ...
During the past three weeks John Palacio, the City Administrator, and I have had several meetings and conversations with engineers and state agencies for the City projects that we anticipate working on during the coming months. It is always a challenge to work out the details on systems that are carefully monitored by environmental regulations.
AUSTIN, TX – State Representative Andrew Murr (R- Junction) recently filed House Bill 1466, legislation that will force telecommunications companies to own up to their responsibilities to timely repair damaged telephone infrastructure and restore basic communication services following a disaster or emergency. We placed 8 dogs in adoptive homes and transferred one to a partnering shelter that was adopted the very next day! As with all animals placed by Second Chance, these lucky adoptees went to their new homes having received appropriate veterinary care, fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered and micro-chipped. During January Second Chance partnered with the Animal Cont ...

Our short tease of spring is gone. We have had a few cold days. The goal at our house is to use up some of the woodpile on the porch before spring so we don’t have to move it back to the fence. We have burned up a large amount of wood in the last few days.

Take Me Home Country Roads,,, Slowly! During a special meeting of the Mason County Commissioners' Court on February 4th, and again at the regular meeting on February 11th, one of the topics that was discussed involved imposing speed limits on county roads. After discussion, the Court opted to not enact speed limits at this time. The topic came in response to constituent complaints about people driving at unsafe speeds on some of the county's dirt and paved roads.
If you are a lover of wine and chocolate, like me, then the idea of pairing these two delectable items is heaven on earth. Some say they couldn’t possibly be compatible, but that is not the case. Both grapes and cocoa beans are fermented, so it’s no wonder they can be compatible.
The Shepherd’s Staff Kudos to Pastor Ryan Buck for his pointing out the hypocrisy of The Odeon Preservation Association in The Shepherd’s Staff on January 30th. The O.P.A. took the liberty of cancelling the movie “Gosnell” due to their belief that the movie would be politically divisive because of it’s anti abortion message.

She entertains her staff of teachers on a fairly regular basis, and recently used this sauce as an ice cream topping at one of their get-togethers. She shared the recipe with me, I want to share it with you, since it’s right down The Practical Baker’s alley: quick, easy and delicious! Ingredients:  3 squares (one ounce each) of unsweetened b ...
I know, I initially said I would try to write a sometimes-weekly column. Who knew it would be months before I got another one done? My respect for Gerald Gamel has doubled. How in the world does he do a weekly column? Where does he get his ideas and have the time?
Camp Discovery is taking shape! The roof is on the pavilion, the ground is being prepared for laying the floor pavers, and some donations have been moved in. I want to thank the Johnny Fleming family and Samuel Martinez for donating the huge stumps that will become the Discovery Forest and Jess and Trudy Irwin for donating landscape rocks for Discovery Mountain.
Bear with me Once in a while someone mistakes me for a serious outdoor writer, usually to their detriment. Not that I don’t write the occasional serious column, when a situation calls for it, but I primarily just make fun of stuff and ridicule people. It’s a lot easier than coming up with facts and such. One of the questions I get from folks looking for actual information is what caliber gun they should use for certain game animals.
Musings at the Mail Box… There was much to chatter about when Uncle Mort reached his mailbox down the lane. A neighbor on the next farm was fetching his mail too, the day was sunny and warm, and their chance meeting suggested that a protracted visit loomed. It did. They “prattled” away, each sticking to topics of self-interest. Mort wanted to talk about how Dallas Cowboy Quarterback Tony Romo finally got to the Super Bowl (albeit as an announcer), and his friend was ready to share ...
