Sorting Through All the Pieces... Assembling the content for a weekly newspaper isn't something that happens on a whim. I've spent 20 years working with writers and photographers, cultivating content that I feel our readers want, need and deserve. I go to great lengths to try and provide a broad spectrum of opinions and viewpoints that will benefit the community as a whole.
City Revenue Taxes UP? Or Not? Folks, last week’s paper had “Comments” and “Corner” columns from some of the Mason city commissioners. If you have not read these columns, I urge you to do so now for the information that they contain—and do not contain. The Mutual Admiration Association of the Mason City Commissioners was in full display in that one commissioner wanted to pat another one on the back.
City Agenda Commissioner Robin Lee is requesting the addition of two agenda items for the October 21 City Commission meeting that, if passed, would create a finance committee composed presumably of himself and one other commissioner -- in effect creating “super” commissioners and “regular” commissioners. Commissioner Lee further states analysis of the new landfill is in urgent need. At this point, we believe it is important that each commissioner make a public, on-the-record com ...
Stuff Happens A tragic chain of events In the first part of September this year while my wife and I were visiting Utah and Wednesday the 9th I was notified by my sister in law that my power was off at the house here in Mason and according to my freezer had been out for three days. So the very next morning I called the city of Mason and was informed that the automatic payment that was due on the 5th got returned because my checking account was frozen.
Fake News? I see fake news is alive and well. Reading the past week’s paper with not one, but two, diatribes about ‘so-called’ climate change, I had to laugh. It really doesn’t matter if we all agree on climate change or not. It’s happening with, or without, your belief. Or acceptance. That there’s still a market for such willful ignorance is unbelievable.
Quick and Easy Bread Sticks courtesy: Sara Hennigan As the name implies, these are quick and easy, and will be consumed by the dozens. They do require a bit of kneading, and they are a bit of a mess to make, but the results are well worth the clean-up! Ingredients: 1 cup of Greek, plain yogurt 1 ½ cups of self rising flour (That’s it, folks; that’s really all there is!) Process: Preheat oven to 500 degrees Combine ingredients in a large mixing bowl Dump out onto a wel ...

You are what you ate last We seem to be running short on a lot of stuff lately. According to a website called ListVerse, there are several important commodities that are in meager supply, such as sand. Yes, sand. The site claims we’re running out of sand, which is used to make concrete, glass, asphalt, toothpaste, and beaches.
What’s in a Hot Dog?... We’ve long been led to believe that we “can’t know the players without a program.” However, it’s generally agreed that they are needed for sports purists who want to identify all of the players, from the “stars to the scrubs.” At the State Fair of Texas in Dallas--where they feature three football games annually during the event’s three-week run--attendees gobbling foodstuff on the midway may need programs to know with specificity what’s going d ...

You get what you wish for. And more. A stitch in time saves nine. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. And don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Look before you leap. See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Silence is golden. Give an inch, they’ll take a mile. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face. Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. And don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. Now that’s a horse of a different color. Never bite th ...
