In the immortal words of the noted poet Eric Burdon, and echoed by everyone in my High School Class of ‘69, “we gotta get outa this place!” Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” who absolutely insist on living life to the fullest, have taken this quote to heart for our inaugural get-together of 2020, as we hit the road for a field trip to scenic Brady, Texas.
But first, a recap of our fabulous Christmas party, celebrated at the home of “Mrs.

When I and my, now deceased wife Sall ...

Happy New Year. I am ready for a new year. It gives us the mindset of new starts. No, I will not exercise more or eat less. However, I will work on being nicer. I will try to organize my sewing room that is in serious danger of caving in.

Sweeping Away 2019!

I think I’ll take the back way around
where road is grey and leaves are brown
no fuss I’ll make by neighbor’s window
they will not note me in the town
It should freeze tonight - the shudders shut
All others seem in houses tucked
But I will pace my rocky rounds
With furry friend in silent truck
Miles in heels, leagues in knees
I’ll stop beside the woodland trees
To see if my companion’s thirsty
And ponder if my work’s been worthy

The Ice Cowpades
I thought I had heard every sound there was to hear on our ranch. But this was a new noise.

Upon Further Review…
Upon recollection of 2019, what are considered “top-of—the-heap” memories depend on who is doing the recollecting.
This has to be one of the most brain-scrambling beginnings ever unleashed during 17 years of column-writing.
Completing what I thought to be an “okay” discourse to a convention audience long ago, I experienced a “bubble-bursting.” The “flat-as-a-pancake” deflation reduced me to a small size, maybe even “extra small.” An overheard ...
Firecracker Shrimp Packets
I grill pretty much year-round, not just because it is healthy, but I really enjoy grilling. One of the things I enjoy about it is that I can sit on my patio with friends, family, dogs and relax and we have had a few “warmish days.” I think both of my kids have caught the knack, too.
