Riata members held their February 25th meeting in the Stribling Room of the Mason County M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. Our program was presented by our guests from The Frontier Healthcare Network. Cam Kleibrink, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer gave an overview of the history and development of the network that serves six central Texas counties.
The Llano Country Opry will be staged on Saturday, March 14, at the Lantex Theater in downtown Llano. The show will begin at 2:30 PM and admission is $20 per person. The Mason Cowgirls competed well at their first track meet against several larger schools at the Blanco Panther Relays on Thursday, February 27. Our JV girls finished in 4th place overall and our Varsity girls finished in 5th place overall behind Wimberley, Lago Vista, Johnson City, and Comfort. Results are listed below. The Mason ISD Scholarship Foundation was formed through the generosity of the late Geneva Keller, a Mason County native. Mrs. Keller left her ranchland of approximately 600 acres, an area better known to locals as White’s Crossing, to the Foundation to be sold and the proceeds used for higher education for graduates of Mason ISD.
Boss Lion Michael Murphy called the meeting to order at 12:30 PM at Nacho’s Café in Mason on February 25, 2020. Mason Cowgirls ran off with the lead late in the game in a 17-14 victory over San Saba on Saturday. The game was tied at 14 with Mason Cowgirls batting in the bottom of the sixth when Avery Brooks tripled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. Mason Cowgirls earned the victory despite allowing San Saba to score nine runs in the fourth inning. Friday, February 28th, the Mason Junior High Cowgirls went to Blanco to compete in their first track meet of the year. The 8th grade girls finished 2nd overall competing against larger schools like Wimberly, Llano, Lago Vista, Johnson City, and Comfort. Our 7th grade team finished 7th with only 9 athletes competing.
The Mason Boys track team traveled this past week to Blanco to attend the Blanco Panther Relay (Thursday 27). The young men competed very well and represented Mason with PRIDE AND CLASS. The teams at the meet were, Blanco, Comfort, Lago Vista, Wimberly, Johnson City and Incarnate Word. Save the date! The Steady Steps annual spring fundraiser will be on Saturday, March 21st at 6 PM at the Ft. Mason Community Building. Don’t miss this year’s “Under the Sea” event featuring a delicious catered meal from Nacho’s (by donation - no tickets needed) and the traditional cake and silent auctions.
Record crowds have been noted at the monthly tours conducted by the Seaquist House Foundation. Not only have there been a large number of in-state visitors, but a surprising number of out-of-state visitors have also been in attendance. These visitors stay in town, eat at local restaurants, and shop in the stores around the Square.
The Riata Service Organization plans their Annual Rummage Sale for Saturday morning, March 7th from 8:00-12:00 at the American Legion Hall, located on Post Hill St. behind the Mason jail. The funds raised from the sale are always channeled back into the Mason community through various projects. Some items available will include furniture, household items, linens, jewelry, clothes and other treasures.

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Mike Conaway (TX-11) invites high school students from the 11th District of Texas to participate in the 2020 Congressional Art Competition. The deadline to enter is Monday, April 6th. The Congressional Art Competition is an annual competition hosted by congressional districts around the nation. Sara (Sorrells) Cunningham, age 66, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2020, in Brownwood, Texas. She was born on June 4, 1953, in Brady, Texas, to Troy and Inez (Probst) Sorrells. Sara was a Christ-follower, loving wife, devoted mother, Nana, and friend to all. She was a medical transcriptionist, serving doctors at Brady Hospital for many years.
Harold Kimsey Shearer, 89, of Corpus Christi died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, February 16. A memorial service for Harold was held Saturday, February 29, at 2 PM at the Seaside Funeral Home in Corpus Christi. A family-led burial is planned for Friday, March 6, 10 AM at the Voca Cemetery.
Does Wednesday Morning Change Things? I looked back through my many years of columns and some of the topics I've addressed. Several times over the years, I've addressed what happens the day after an election cycle ends. In most cases, those have been national elections, as Mason County residents can be quite involved in selecting their elected leaders.

Tamale Loaf I found this recipe in the San Angelo Standard Times from 1963. It was submitted to the “Angelo Woman’s Concho Cookery Cooking contest”.
