The 2021 Mason High School One Act Play won the District One Act Play contest with first place ranks from all three judges on March 2 at the Mason HS Auditorium. The students have been attending rehearsals after long days of school and sport practices, sacrificing free time on Sunday afternoons while keeping up with school work to prepare their production.

The Mason High School varsity softball team began District 28-2A play this past week and the Cowgirls picked up two lopsided wins at home vs. Junction High School and on the road at Harper High School. The Mason High School tennis team advanced to the 3A & Under State Team Tournament again this year after winning the Region IV tournament on Saturday, March 6th. Mason beat both Llano and San Saba 19-0 to advance to the State Tournament held in San Antonio on March 12-13. Mason once again brought home the State Championship after beating the Wall Hawks 10-4 in the final round Saturday evening at Northside Tennis Center in San Antonio.
The Mason High School varsity baseball team won its seventh straight game on Friday, March 12 when the Punchers won a 13-0 blowout contest at home vs. Goldthwaite High School. With the Punchers already leading the Eagles 1-0, the Mason offense really took flight beginning in the bottom of the third inning when Spencer Morris cracked a solo home run over the leftfield fence. The Punchers continued the bottom of the third inning with a two-out rally.

The Mason Youth Baseball & Softball Association would like to invite everyone to their upcoming Opening Day Ceremonies, annual brisket fundraiser and games to be held on Saturday, March 27th. Come early and hungry and stay all day. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The City of Mason began accepting trash at the new landfill last week. We are so proud that this project is complete and will serve our city for generations to come. Our March City Commission meeting was Monday evening. After a public hearing on several items, the meeting kicked off with awarding a contract to a company to assist the City with seeking a Texas Community Development Block Grant for purposes of funding the upcoming lift station project which will help to keep our sewer service ...
A benefit for Viatrice Guerrero has been set for March 27th, 1pm at the Pavilion to help with medical and monthly expenses. Viatrice was diagnosed with acute sigmoid diverticulitis in January, and has had one surgery and will have another in July. It will take five months for her to recuperate.
Volunteers are needed to help with softball tournaments from June 12th through November 27th. The events are being held to raise money for two local families and to help rebuild of the Mason County Courthouse. The tournaments will take place every other weekend. ASA Rules will apply, over the fence is out, 55 minute game times, and the fee is $200.

Douglas Andrew Phillips passed away peacefully on March 12, 2021 at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo, Texas surrounded by his family. Douglas was born to Henry and Mamie (Hight) Phillips on February 6, 1939 and was raised in Menard County, Texas. He attended school in Menard and graduated from Menard High School.
Sandra Schmidt O’Donnell passed away on March 7, 2021, surrounded by loved ones. Sandra was born on January 19, 1941, to Roy and Bernice Schmidt in Brady, Texas. She was raised on the family ranch in the beautiful hill country. She had the deepest love and respect for Mason County and her family heritage.
Why Are Densities of Whitetail Deer So High on the Edwards Plateau?
There are a lot of Whitetail Deer in Texas—about 5.6 million of them. In part, that is because there is a lot of Whitetail Deer habitat in Texas. If we exclude areas of West Texas where Whitetails do not occur, there are about 113 million acres of Whitetail habitat in Texas.

Grasshopper for Dinner?
Many birds can be extremely helpful when it comes to controlling unwanted guests aka damaging insects, to our gardens. Bluebirds, Cardinals, Chickadees, House Finches, Hummingbirds, Purple Martins, Nuthatches, Oriole, Tanagers, Titmice, Woodpeckers, and Wrens to name a few of our beneficial avian friends. To invite birds to your garden there are several requirements.
For many of us, the freeze clean-up is still underway. After many loads of frozen cacti, century plants, and tree damage trimmings it appears to be almost at a finish. I need some time for the garden. But this brings me to a question so many of us have. After the freeze, broken pipes, pumps, wells frozen, and for many the loss of electric power, how can we prepare for the future?

A few weeks ago I presented you with a recipe for Rustic Bread. It's a good recipe that makes up a really nice loaf of bread. Unfortunately, you had to make up the dough and chill it overnight and if you're anything like me, planning anything a whole day ahead of time is a challenge!
On Tuesday, March 9th, the Mason Lions Club member’s met at Nachos for their weekly meeting. Attendance and membership continued to improve dramatically as Lion Vice Governor Joel Kuykendall inducted a new member to the Club, Joe Hiza, owner of Puncher Towing in Mason. Happy Spring. We will welcome the first day of spring this weekend. I don’t know about you but I am ready for bluebonnets and all the Texas wildflowers. There is an important meeting tonight, March 17, at the Art Methodist Church. Plans are being made to start our Sunday School up again.
