District 53 Representative Andrew Murr visited Mason on June 18, 2021. Representative Murr was instrumental in securing $6,000,000 in new funding to help rebuild the Mason County Courthouse. In his personal research Murr said this was the first time in about two decades that the state has give money to a county, outside of grant money, for their courthouse. "This was an attack on the Judiciary branch of government,"
In Part 2 of this story, which will be in next week’s Mason County News, hear from county officials and learn about some possible solutions. Mason County’s agricultural landowners have been shelling out more in property taxes over the past few years, and some are asking why. One local ranch manager told the News that the owner’s property tax bills began to increase substantially beginning around five years ago and were raised $9,000 just last year alone. “Commercial and resident ...
With a steadfast dedication and wealth of knowledge, Pattie Allen is no stranger to the City of Mason’s inner workings. Having begun her career with the City in 2001, Pattie has amassed a mental library for problem solving and procedural formality that continues to ensure smooth operations on a daily basis. In May of 2001, Pattie was elected Commissioner of District 1.

Caterpillar Plagues and Their Connection to the Weather
The weather this year has been bonkers–that is the “technical” term for our record late-winter cold snap, devastating April hail storms, and wet, cool spring. As a result of this unusual weather, I’ve seen trees that have put out three sets of leaves already, as well as trees that didn’t leaf out at all until June. The hard late-February freeze set back the leaf-out of many trees.
We have Happy Tails Mobile Zoo coming to the library tomorrow at 4:00! Don’t miss the chance for your kids to see real animals at the library! Next week, we will host Legomania on Tuesday July 29th from 2:00 to 3:00. Our third program for kids will be July 6th at 11:00 and Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue will be bringing some donkeys for kids to see.
Summer Solstice has arrived with all the fun of this season. It’s time for vacation, family meals, gathering, and, of course, the gardens are in full production. Tomatoes, peppers, and basil are all producing—to name a few. The corn is tasseled; the pollen is falling on the silk. It won’t be long before corn harvest. During this heat-soaked busy time of intense sun is when you will see the impact of watering.
Cherry Tomato Bread Courtesy: A Practical Baker Original!
Just about every year, our cherry tomato plants produce more product that we can eat, even when we work hard at it. We eat the little tomatoes until our mouths are burned out from the acid! Fresh on salads; fresh right out of a bowl in the refrigerator; rendered down in a skillet for tomato base for an Italian food favorite; but we still can’t keep ahead of them.
Frozen Wedding Punch
June is also the month of Matrimony; it brings back memories of weddings and showers. This was before cucumber water, bird seeds and bubbles. We drank sugary punch and threw rice at the newlyweds. It seemed like when I was a child we were going to a wedding or a shower all summer long.
The name of the cemetery had been changed. That was the first problem. We were looking for Roselawn Memorial Park. When we got to the place where it was shown on the map, there was a burial park, but the name was San Fernando Cemetery #3. Seeing nothing else in the vicinity that looked like a burial ground, we decided this must be the place.
Vegans with a Beef
After a column I wrote about vegans recently, I received a few notes from people who wanted to let me know, in the kindest possible way, that I’m a horrible, bloodthirsty neanderthal who is destroying the planet, torturing animals, and destroying the planet, in that order. They also informed me that, because I eat meat, I’m at greater risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and hemorrhoids, and I should stop to improve my health.
