Commissioners held their regular meeting for June last Tuesday, June 13, and reconvened for a special meeting on Monday, June 19 to further discuss repaving the parking around the courthouse. At the regular June 13 meeting Commissioner Tommy Weir also gave an update on the South County Annex project. Courthouse Square Repaving The County Courthouse parking lot may be repaved in the coming weeks.
Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British and, as traitors, were tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.
The Blanco County Appraisal District Board approved the Appraisal office’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. They also enacted a no cash policy to be phased into this year’s tax collection. 2017 Budget The board opened a public hearing in which no one from the public expressed questions or concerns with the proposed budget.
AUSTIN — State emergency responders geared up for the first time this hurricane season in response to Tropical Storm Cindy, which came ashore just east of the Texas-Louisiana border on June 22. Two deaths were attributed to the storm — one of them an elderly man found in a sand-mired pickup truck on Texas’ Bolivar Peninsula. The storm dropped most of its rainfall east of its center — up to 18 inches in some places far to the east — and much less in Texas.
Sometimes an event happens in someone’s lifetime that is so profound it is the one thing that person will remember forever. A tearful, but happy reunion between two people who experienced such an event took place last Friday. Joaquin Olmedo, Blanco Boy Scout Troop 497, has earned the highest Rank in Scouting, that of Eagle Scout. On May 7, 2017, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held at the Old Blanco Courthouse to present Joaquin as an Eagle Scout, an award only a few Scouts earn. Family, friends and Scouts attended to share in Joaquin’s joy and to wish him well. To earn his Eagle Rank, Joaquin had to progress through 6 Scouting ranks, earn a minimum of twenty-one Merit Badges, demonstrate Scout Spirit and demons ...
Offensively Andrew Shelton was the team leader in 5 categories; Games played, innings played, at bats, hits and walks while posting the 5th highest batting average on the team at .429. After this season, Andrew ranks 3rd all-time in the Panther JV Record books for innings played at 120 this season. Kelton Marek set a new JV record with 8 sacrifices in addition to being the team leader in RBI’s and having the second highest batting average on the team at .465 Hunter West posted the highest bat ...
Girls golf: Ashley Stuever had a great year posting scores in the 80’s and was the district champion for the junior varsity in the 25AAA golf tournament. Boys golf: Jake Mangold , Hayden Calzoncit, Cooper Riley, Ty Preiss, The season started off well and ended even better! The last five years we have made it to the final tournament of the season, UIL state golf!
Three Blanco County students have just returned from a once-in-a-lifetime leadership conferenace that has (him/her) well on the way to success. William Adams, Colby Turner,= and Amber Bray represented Blanco County Farm Bureau at Texas Farm Bureau’s (TFB) 54th annual Youth Leadership Conference (YLC). “YLC is more than a conference or camp,” Glenn Sultemeier, Director of Blanco County Farm Bureau, said.
Blanco State Park already hit full capacity on Sunday, June 18, which was Father’s Day. The park attendants think July 4 will be the same. The overnight camp grounds are fully booked every weekend until August of this year, but day passes are available on a first come, first serve basis. The staff wants to warn people that once the park is at full capacity, no one else is let into the park, period.
Head Chef Cindy Voss and her husband and business manager Dave Klaus, have embarked on an exciting new journey of restaurant ownership. Though opening a restaurant is new to Cindy, making tasty and innovative dishes is not. Cindy started cooking at a young age in her mother’s kitchen in Kansas City, Kansas, mixing up random ingredients from the cupboard.
Dear Editor, This letter is to correct a statement reported in last week’s newspaper. It was reported during the June meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission Mr. Mike Green addressed Mr. Greg Ortiz. While speaking, Mr. Green was quoted as reading a letter from Ralph DeLeon of the Blanco County Inn.
