You might be shocked to learn (I know I was) that we start losing muscle in our thirties! Yes, thirties. We can lose as much as 4-5 pounds of muscle each decade. And that muscle loss accelerates after 50. No wonder activities requiring strength get more difficult once we get into our sixties and over. Now comes the good news.
We missed an opportunity to remind the community to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of our county Emergency Management personnel during the national EMS Week. A Facebook ad just doesn’t do justice to what our community owes the Blanco County EMS staff who tirelessly serve us with an extreme level of professionalism, commitment to high standards of care and speed of response that was tested this past week. We listen to the scanner during very busy and hectic calls every week, and I ...
My submariner daughter emailed me recently, and among all of the exciting updates (including the fact that she achieved the submarine qualification she was working toward), she mentioned how she has been struggling with “just not feeling myself.” She told me about sleeping 2.5 hours within the last 24. Being in close quarters in a submarine underway means no sunlight, no fresh air and limited opportunity for exercise.
I am an affected person. This is TCEQ’s language. If there is nothing wrong with discharging treated sewage into the Blanco River, why are those who live/drink/swim within one mile of the treatment plant’s discharge point called effected by the agency that issues the permit? There must be a reason.
One of my earliest and most fond memories of my life as a Boy Scout was a week-long camping adventure in Utah’s High Uinta Mountains. Camp Steiner was a dream-come-true for a 12-year-old city boy. In the shadow of 13,500 foot King’s Peak, my buddies and I scampered through the forests, canoed on cold mountain lakes, slept snugly in mummy bags against the frigid night air, cooked our meals over open fires and thrilled to the endless tales of ghosts, goblins and mystic white buffalo as we ...
In yogic philosophy the word sadhana is defined as a daily practice or a means to accomplish something. Your sadhana is the main tool you use to work on your spiritual life. This could mean prayer, reading the Bible, or any spiritual text, meditation or practicing yoga asana (postures). There are three stages of sadhana; outer practices, inner practices and the innermost practices.
A good friend of mine is a trauma doctor in Boerne. She recently asked me about my post-surgical healing, and I answered in detail. With slight sarcasm, she quizzed: “Because you went back to work too soon after surgery, or what?” I responded with a raised eyebrow, and curled one side of my top lip with a shrug of the shoulder.
In the early 1970s affirmative action became the law of the land. In Austin, if you weren’t a minority female, you could forget about getting a good professional entry-level job. It was at that time that I exited the Univ. of Texas at Austin with a master’s degree. “We like your credentials and experience but…” Thus it went with job interviews.
We have lived on the Blanco River for 20 years. I’d like to share these thoughts on the divisive plans to increase discharge of partially treated sew-age into the Blanco River. We all cherish two symbols of Blanco’s identity; Old Blanco County Courthouse and Blanco River. When the Courthouse was threatened, the greater Blanco community mobilized to decisively save the courthouse and continue to work together to preserve this icon. Today the Blanco River, which acts as a magnet for ...
If you don’t text with kids, you may not know what LOL means, or GTG or LMS. What about KYS? Do you know what that means? KYS; one of the shorthand messages that’s been in popular social media use since its inception. Trying to figure out exactly where it first began is sort of like trying to discover exactly who first used ‘OK’ to mean ‘yes.’ Regardless, it’s either a smart-aleck remark or a dangerous prod. In case you don’t know, KYS is an acronym for ‘kill yourself,’ ...
