The Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department is back from almost seven days of deployment conducting rescue operations in Port Arthur, just as Tropical Storm Harvey made its second landfall late Wednesday, Aug. 30. Johnson City Volunteer Fire Department received a request from the State of Texas for rescue assistance on Tuesday, Aug.
The Blanco Panthers lost their season opener to the Canyon Lake Hawks 38-0 on Friday, September 1. With home field advantage, the Hawks scored their first touchdown on a 28 yard pass play at the 6:56 mark in the first quarter. The extra point kick was good with the Hawks taking a 7-0 lead. Canyon Lake tacked on a field goal to lead 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Blanco Panther junior varsity football team lost a tough defensive battle 14-12 against the Canyon Lake Hawks on Thursday, August 31. The Panthers and Hawks held each other scoreless throughout the first half. Then in the third quarter Blanco scored a touchdown on a run by Christian Flores. The two point pass attempt after the touchdown failed.
With infrastructure and facilities pummeled by Harvey and rendered unsafe and inoperable, as well as facing displaced school personnel and students, many Texas community schools are closed and could remain so for weeks and even months. Harvey forced the closure of more than 200 school districts for at least a day, but dozens remain closed.
The Lady Panther volleyball team posted six wins this past week beginning on Tuesday, August 29 with a 3-0 victory over the Cole Lady Cougars at the Blanco High School gym. Set scores against the Cougars were 25-20, 25-23, 25-22. The junior varsity blue team won 25-14,25-10 and the junior varsity gold team won 25-3,25-14.
The Blanco Coalition on Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment of Substance Abuse (Blanco CoAPT) is hosting a “Livin’ Clean” Safe and Drug-Free Wellness Fair on September 13, 2017 from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Blanco High School Cafeteria. Blanco CoAPT is hosting this FREE family fun event to provide awareness and education on reducing youth substance abuse.
The Tejas Art Club is a local art club that meets once a week every Thursday at the Buggy Barn on 281. Currently the club meets at Bean and Biscuit every third Thursday of the month. The club meets from 12:30 to 2:30 in the afternoon. New artists are welcome, or anyone who has an interest in learning art is welcome to join. Club dues are $25 per year.
Mr. Michael “Mike” P. Cayce of Sisterdale passed away on Monday, August 28 at the age of 66 years. Michael Prentice Cayce was born on February 12th, 1951 to John William Prentice “Pat” and Doris Jean Alsup Cayce. He married Patricia A. Clark on July 26th, 2003 in Sisterdale, Texas Mr. Michael “Mike” Cayce is survived by his wife: Patricia A.
Caroline Lou Du Bose, 87, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2017 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Caroline was born April 23, 1930 in LaGrange, TX to Ersken and Loine Ilse Robertson. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Robert E. “Bucky” Robertson and Robert L.

Blanco public safety, business and community resources sprang into action to provide services and support to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Blanco Volunteer Fire Department sent a water rescue team, led by Blanco Fire Chief Matt McMain and volunteers Danny Alba and Joe Ortega, which deployed to Houston on Aug. 28. “On our way to check-in in Houston, most of the roads were completely blocked by water,” said Chief McMain.
