When the call came into Blanco County EMS for support for Hurricane Harvey in advance of landfall, Chief Ben Oakley didn’t hesitate for a second. “When Blanco County had its flood in 2015, the communities needing help now were the same communities that sent resources here to help us,” said Chief Oakley.
For several months, Blanco County officials have been constructing the budget for the upcoming fiscal year that goes into effect on Oct. 1. On Tuesday, Sept. 12, the Commissioners will hold public hearings for the proposed budget and tax rate before voting on the items on Monday, Sept. 18. The overall expenditures for the county is budgeted at $8,152,562.
The Blanco Rodeo Association’s hosted its first Playday and 4D Barrel Race in its 2017 series of events on Saturday, Sept. 9 at the arena at Yett Memorial Park. Events included ring and pole, poles straights and cloverleaf barrel races. “Dozens of riders participated in the event,” said Jenni Johnson, Blanco Rodeo Association board member and event organizer.
The Texas Dept. of Transportation was awarded more than $20 .8 million in federal TIGER* grants to improve transportation services for rural populations in October 2015. The funding will help replace 325 vehicles located throughout the state that are used to transport rural residents. The funds also will go toward updating or constructing transportation facilities in or near the following Texas cities: South Padre Island, Early, Weatherford and Cedar Creek. This season, 60 children will compete in league play, including four under-6 teams with players aged 3-5 years, three U8 teams with players aged 6-7, and two U10 teams with players aged 8-9.

Like most youth groups, the “Magnet STAR” kids needed to raise some funds in order to carry out their high school theatre activities. They came to me, their principal, for some ideas and, most of all, for permission. Following the annual stock show in January, the Sale Committee has in the past added onto the auction prices, raising all livestock projects up to the average of their category.
Varsity Girls Finish Fourth
The Blanco High School cross country team ran in the Harper Cross Country meet on Saturday, Sept. 9. The girl's varsity team finished in fourth place. Johanna Villarreal placed second, followed closely by teammate Steely Steiner in fourth place. Ashton Hunt crossed the finish line in 23rd place. Chloe Flores finished 40th, Jada Hector placed 43rd, and Carlie Waxler took 54th place. McKenna Clark, competing in junior varsity, placed 24th overall winning first place.
The Blanco High School junior varsity football team beat the Holy Cross Knights 14-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 6 at the BHS stadium. Holy Cross kicked off into the end zone to start the game. The Panthers went to work on offense on their own 25-yard line. Using four ball carriers, Blanco moved the ball down the field.

The Blanco High School varsity football team fell to the Holy Cross Knights 21-0 this past Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex in San Antonio. The Knights wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with an 80-yard scoring drive capped by a pass for a touchdown. Holy Cross kicked the extra point and took a 7-0 lead, with 11:22 remaining in the first quarter. Florine and Harold Lord were married 70 years ago on Sept. 5, 1947, in Cuero, Texas, just after Harold returned from service in the Army Air Corps. The Lords moved to Blanco in 1950, when Harold was recruited to be the manager of Luther Hill’s Loma Ranch. Such a special anniversary required days of recognition of their contributions by friends and family.
Dominick Matthew Torti, at the age of 41, died on Sept. 1, 2017, in Batesville, Miss., while doing something that he loved—riding his motorcycle. Much to his chagrin, he lived in Whitfield, Miss., on the campus of a psychiatric hospital at the time of his death. Those who knew Dominick would not be surprised to find out that he eventually ended up at a psychiatric hospital, although ironically it was not because of mental instability but due to his wife’s job. Bailey Lyn Moore of Blanco passed away on Saturday, Sept. 9th, 2017, at the age of 58. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13, from 5-7 pm at Crofts-Crow Funeral Home in Blanco with a Memorial Service to be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 14 at Crofts – Crow Funeral Chapel. Bailey was born on February 13, 1959 in Galveston, Texas, and was raised on a Ranch in Kendall County.
Marvin W. “Sammy” Flugrath, 88 of Blanco passed away Wednesday, Sept. 6,, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation was Saturday, Sept. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Crofts-Crow Funeral Home in Blanco. Services were held Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Blanco, and burial followed with military honors in the Blanco Cemetery.
