Volunteers with the Blanco Good Samaritan Center gathered Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, for their annual meeting, held at the Blanco United Methodist Church. The center, which includes a thrift store and food pantry located at 620 Pecan St., provides food and other assistance for people in need across Blanco County.
The Blanco Woman’s Club held its first meeting of the 2017-18 year in the home of club president, Carolyn Geiler, on Oct. 11, 2017. The legislative cepartment arranged the program and invited Blanco Mayor Martha Herden to speak. Mayor Herden discussed the growth she anticipates for Blanco and emphasized the need to manage that growth.
The Blanco High School Class of 1967 met for its 50th reunion on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, at the home of Diane and James Blackburn. There were 29 graduates in the class and 17 attended the reunion.
The early voting period for the upcoming Nov. 7, 2017 Special Constitutional Amendment Elections in Blanco County begins on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, and will run through Friday, Nov. 3, 2017. Registered voters will vote FOR or AGAINST the seven (7) Texas Constitutional Amendments submitted by the 85th Legislative Session. Voters are also reminded that a current photo identification is still required to vote.
The Oct. 10, 2017 meeting of the governing body of Blanco, began with public comments. Blanco Historic Preservation Commission Chair Retta Martin urged council to allow the BHPC to return to the Byars Building to hold meetings. “It should be the center for historic preservation in Blanco,” said Martin. One of the executive session items the city council was scheduled to discuss was the city’s plans for the historic building.
While Blanco High School was celebrating its homecoming, a different, little known homecoming was taking place in southeast Blanco County. Peyton Colony, founded in 1874 by Peyton Roberts as a freedmen’s community, held its 143rd annual homecoming in Peyton Colony’s Mount Horeb Baptist Church. “Our homecoming is a gathering of anyone who used to live around here,” Lawrence Coffee, Mt.
Blanco Independent School District played host to Lexington for the Homecoming football game last week, and the festivities concluded with a dance Saturday night, Oct. 14, 2017, sponsored by Project Graduation. Homecoming activities took place throughout the week, including a pep rally following Wednesday’s parade, half-time celebrations and the crowning of 2017 Queen Mia Albrecht, nominated by the National Honor Society.

On Homecoming night, Friday, Oct 13, 2017, captains Kelby Cox, Jett Hood, Tristan Lopez, and Brandon Phipps took the field for the coin toss. The Lexington Eagles won the toss and deferred possession to the 2nd half. On Blanco’s first offensive drive Cox hit Toby Treisch on a 22 yard pass play.
The Lady Panther volleyball team posted two shut out wins this past week to improve their district record to 9-1. On Tuesday, Oct 10, 2017, Blanco defeated the Ingram Lady Warriors 25-14, 25-11, and 25-17. Kenzie Warner paced the team with eight kills, three service aces, and two blocks. Hanna Srackengast smacked six kills.
With four runners finishing in the top 10, the Blanco girls varsity cross country team captured the District 25-3A championship on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, held at Florence High School. Junior Johanna Villarreal blazed the two-mile course with a 12:60.90 1st place finish. Sophomore Steely Steiner crossed the finish line at 12:43.51.
The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) will host a ranch gathering on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds in Fredericksburg, Texas. The event allows local cattle producers to learn about TSCRA’s recent activities and network with other cattle raisers in the area. CPOC Frank B. West, USN (RET), 94, passed away October 15, 2017 in Blanco, TX. Frank was born August 28, 1923 in Austin, TX to Henry Hiram West and Pearl Etta (Bagby) West. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Raye Jackson, Jewel Wynona Stewart, and Laura Hazel Price; and brother, Arthur Darrell “Tiny” West.
Oct. 10, 2017, was a red-letter day for Real Ale Brewing Company, as long-awaited tanks arrived for installation in a newly constructed brew house. Three ships carrying nine containers from Germany were forced to stay in the Gulf of Mexico during Hurricane Harvey; and when they came into the port of Houston, the trailers scheduled to carry them to Blanco had to have their axles repaired because of floodwater damage.
