The Blanco County Sheriff’s Office received 311 calls for service from 2/19/2018 through 2/25/2018. The Blanco City Council convened a special meeting on Feb. 20, 2018, with Mayor Herden and all council members present. After calling the meeting to order, Mayor Herden commented on recent efforts to bring about change to the city with regards to the water treatment and the wastewater treatment plant by addressing priority, long-term concerns.

Blanco resident Valerie Williams remembers the day that Fudge came into her life. One day she noticed something unfamiliar in her yard. On closer inspection, she realized it was a scraggly, starving little cat. Being an animal lover, Williams didn’t hesitate to coax the cat into her home so she could give it some food and water, and better assess the situation.
It has been said that when we spend a lot of time reminiscing, we must be getting old. So be it. Perhaps you can remember when families were close and got together often just to enjoy each other’s’ company. I lament the fact that we just don’t seem to find the time for close family interaction any more.
Out of the spirit of community that drove the 2015 Blanco Flood Relief Effort, a group of Blanco County residents came together to create the Christmas Giving Project. Its goal was to deliver Christmas baskets to families who found themselves in the midst of a rough patch in their lives. In 2017, the third year of Christmas Giving, thirty families received this addition to their holiday. Support for the project has grown phenomenally.
On Thursday, Feb. 22, the Blanco High School track team hosted their annual Blanco Panther Relays track meet. Due to the weather there were no field events. Wimberley High School placed first with 127 points, and San Antonio Cole High School placed second with 102 points. The Blanco Panther Varsity Girls placed third with 97 points. On Tuesday, Feb. 20 Blanco defeated the Brooks Academy Bengals, 81-61, for the Bi District title in a game played at New Braunfels High School. The Panthers led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter. Blanco had an impressive statistic as a team, scoring more points each quarter of the game with the 17 in the first followed by 19, 20, and 25.
Four pianists from the Heart of Texas Suzuki Organization including two Blanco County residents, Caroline Welton and Acacia Oyler, performed Bach Concerto movements with a string quartet from Austin on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at the Uptown Blanco Ballroom. Heart of Texas provides thiskind of experience for junior and senior students who have participated in the organization’s activities throughout their school years.
Twin Sisters Dance Hall held their members meeting February 24, 2018. Among the many topics discussed were ways to retain the history of the Twin Sisters area. President Jo Nell Haas brought up the idea of putting outdoor history displays around the hall to tell the history of the area. Unknown to many, the south end of Blanco County, known as Twin Sisters on the Little Blanco River was once a thriving community.
Reverend Kevin Wade Russell, a Catholic priest for 8 years, died on Feb. 17, 2018, in Blanco, Texas at the age of 54. He was born on April 23, 1963 in Channelview, Texas to Thomas Ivan and Cecilia JoAnn Russell. Fr. Russell earned a Master of Divinity degree in 2010 from the University of St.
Richard “Steve” Felps, 79, of Tow, Texas passed away Monday, February 19, 2018, at his home. Steve was born on July 12, 1938, in Johnson City, Texas to Richard Milam Felps and Rozetta Barbara Brown Felps. Early years of Steve’s life started out in Blanco before the family moved to Waco. Steve proudly served his country with the U.S.
Monta Virginia Barry Knoll of Blanco, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2018, in Stephenville, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents Ouisa Juanita Barry Boyd and Claude Hewitt Barry, by her brother Dwight Barry, and by her husband of sixty-two years, Marvin “Dick” Knoll. Eddie E. Hughes, Jr. (Ed), son of Ed E. Hughes, Sr. and Doris J. Hughes, went to join his parents in heaven on Jan. 23, 2018. He is survived by three children; Christopher Cody, Jennifer Monique and Nicholas Elijah, as well as six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by four sisters; Robbin Sue, Bambi Lynn, Dawn Renee and Michelle Denise, and one brother, Jeffrey Scott.
