If you drove by Uptown Blanco Textile Studio last week, you may have noticed the quilt-covered car along Fourth St.
The Studio placed the cover on the shop’s Smart car to draw attention to the nearly 500 quilters who visited the shop Thursday through Saturday, April 12-14. Quilters visited five Hill Country quilt shops as part of the Wildflowers All Around Shop Hop.
A candidate’s forum featuring individuals seeking city of Blanco councilmember positions has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, 2018. The event will take place at 6 p.m. upstairs in the Old Blanco County Courthouse Courtroom.
The moderator will be Libbey Aly, who will accept questions from attendees and monitor timed responses.
Incumbents Martha Gosnell, Martin Sauceda and Tony Vela, and resident Susan Moore are vying for three seats on the city council.
Improvement needed in criminal history reporting
Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton on April 11 sent a joint letter to eight state criminal justice agencies and associations, urging them to review their processes for reporting criminal history to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or “NICS.”
The NICS checks available records on persons who may be disqualified from receiving firearms.

Blanco Valley Homes debuted its Golf Course Series of new homes under construction at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Rockin’ J Thursday, April 12. The series start in the low $400,000s.
“We started out with 10 houses under construction in Unit 2 on or near the Vaaler Creek Golf Course,” David Anderson, manager said.
The builders will next open a less-expensive series near the golf course that start at a $380,000 price.
On Wednesday, April 11, 2018, the Blanco FFA chapter hosted a spring CDE contest at the Well Springs Retreat Center in Blanco. There were 10 high schools in attendance bringing in more than 100 FFA members.
FFA contests consisted of Land Evaluation, Homesite Evaluation and Range. The generous Henderson-Wessendorff Foundation awarded scholarships to the top three seniors in each of these events, with $3,000 for the top senior, $2,000 for the second-place senior and $1,000 for the third-place ...
On March 8, 2018, Interpretive Ranger Daniel Kellogg joined the staff of the Blanco State Park. This is Kellogg’s first assignment as a Park Ranger, and so far, he has really enjoyed the job.
“This Park is so beautiful, and the other employees here at the State Park have been so kind and helpful,” Kellogg commented.
Mark Stevens at 290 Vinery
“The kids in Bristol are sharp as a pistol, when they do the Bristol Stomp”.
That opening line to the first hit record for “The Dovells” (61’) was the beginning of a string of hits and a long career for Mark Stevens and partner of over 50 years, Jerry Gross.
“I couldn’t have written a better story of my life if I tried,” Stevens said.
The Blanco Woman’s Club held its April 2018 meeting last week in the home of Pat Ryan.
Diane Schaenert and Rhonda Carr, both master gardeners, presented a program about creating a bee, butterfly and bird-friendly backyard.
Bees need a water source, a place to nest and flowering plants. Carr said that almost half of North American birds live or pass through central Texas.
Providing plants for food and nesting is essential for maintaining their presence.

The Panther baseball team picked up two district wins this past week with a shutout victory over the Ingram Warriors on Monday, April 9 and an 8-3 win over the Lago Vista Vikings on Friday, April 13.
Justin Wardlow was the winning pitcher against Ingram. Wardlow pitched a one-hitter. Griffin Johnson and Tyler LaRue each had two hits.
Peyton Van Dyke was the winning pitcher in the Lago Vista game.
The Lady Panthers, currently ranked in a tie for 25th in 3A in the state, started the week off strong on Monday, April 9 with a 22-0 run-rule shutout against the Ingram Lady Warriors. Blanco racked up 16 hits in a game that only lasted three innings.
Ashlee LaRue and Hallie Gloor each connected for three hits, including a single and two triples.

Blanco is home to many interesting people, and next week, residents will have the opportunity to meet and hear the adventures of a local doctor who spent a year sailing around the world as a ship’s surgeon in the 1960s.
Barnett Cline, MD, will be talking about the book 4 to 6 p.m.
The Texas Tax Amnesty Program runs from May 1, 2018, through June 29, 2018.
The Texas Tax Amnesty Program will, under certain circumstances, provide delinquent taxpayers with relief from penalties and interest on tax due. Tax amnesty applies to periods prior to Jan. 1, 2018, and only includes liabilities that have not been previously reported to the Comptroller’s office.

Despite bone-chilling temperature and wind, the Blanco Volunteer Fire Department’s 2018 Fish Fry was the most successful to date, thanks to Volunteer Firefighter-in-Charge, Cliff Lener, and the many citizens and supporters in south Blanco County. More than 1,600 delicious meals were served, all prepared by Charles Waxler and his outstanding crew of fun-loving and excellent junior chefs.

The Blanco Association of Retired Educator (BCARE) met in February at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church for a business meeting and a superb program presented by Connie Barron.
Barrron, who teaches Tai Chi at Gem of the Hills, gave a brief history of the Eastern art which is now prescribed by Western physicians.
Tai Chi is excellent for balance, lower body strength, range of motion, and cardiovascular issues, including high blood pressure.

Reuben Eugene Gray was born on June 24, 1931 in the Hill County, Texas to his mother and father, Audra Mae Lewis and Reuben Samuel Gray. He departed this life on Monday, April 9, 2018 at Dignity Senior Care in San Antonio, Texas.
Reuben Eugene Gray always said he married at a young age to the most beautiful woman in the world, Vara Christine Ramey, and knew he was going to marry her the first time he ever laid eyes on her.
Rosie Lee Kunkel, 79, nee Lindig, of Johnson City and formerly of Stonewall, died Friday, April 13, 2018. Rosie was born May 2, 1938, the daughter of Eugene Andrew Lindig and Annie Pearl Schumann Lindig.
She married Kurt Weinheimer on Dec. 22, 1957, in Trinity Lutheran Church, and after their divorce, she married Raymond Lee Kunkel on June 26, 1971.
Richard was born on September 11, 1939 and passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018. Richard was a resident of Kendall County, Texas at the time of passing. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force from 1958-1962. Richard worked at Nasa for several years on the Apollo program and truly enjoyed the work.
Preston Otis Evans, age 84 of Spring Branch, passed away with family by his side at his home on Tuesday April 10, 2018. He was born on February 2, 1934 in San Antonio, Texas.
Preston took pride in his work with Delta Electric of 20 years and Lambda Construction of 20 years.
This week we will continue our verse by verse walk through the book of Ephesians. Eph. 2:20 says, “And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.”
“Chief corner” is one word in the Greek. It speaks of the cornerstone. The foundation of the apostles and prophets are speaking of the foundation they laid, which is Christ Himself.

A certain ambassador of France in times past was often involved in duels. As he was purchasing train tickets to meet at a certain location, his assistant noticed that he bought a one-way ticket. He remarked that he thought that was rather pessimistic, to which the ambassador said, “I plan on using my opponents ticket for the return trip”.
While a student at Brigham Young University I obtained employment as an Operating Room orderly at a local hospital. It was one of the most interesting jobs I have ever had. It was my privilege to pick up patients in their rooms and transport them to the OR and, after surgery, take them to Recovery and then back to their rooms.
If you work in technology, administration or communications, according to definitions used by the Social Security Administration, you have a sedentary job. You’re among roughly 80% of Americans, according to a recent Bureau of Labor Statistics survey. This could be why about half of American workers blame weight gain on their job or work environment.
This is the time to set out spring plants such as copper plant, firebush, periwinkles and caladiums. For fall color set out mint marigolds and Mexican sage. Apply organic fertilizer to grasses, trees, shrubs and perennials. Water in if we don’t receive rain. Organic fertilizer is slow release by nature if you can’t water immediately.
