Feb. 14 is Valentine’s Day, and what better way to celebrate it than to honor those we love. The BCN recently interviewed Bob and Linda Flannery, and was honored to hear their beautiful love story that has spanned almost six decades. The Flannerys are long-time residents of Blanco, and Bob is the son of Dr.
A nonprofit organization has teamed up with county leaders to begin the process of increasing broadband internet service to people in Blanco, Llano and Burnet Counties. Right now, leaders are developing Technology Action Plans and are asking for input from community members. The weather may still be cool and wet, but the Blanco Chamber of Commerce is already looking ahead to the warmer temperatures of June when plants are green and in bloom. In Blanco, the Lavender Capital of Texas, that also means the Blanco Lavender Festival. Every year, a call is put out for submissions for the official artwork for the Blanco Lavender Festival.
The 2020 Blanco County Youth Show turned out to be a great success and meaningful experience for the youth of Blanco County due to the help of countless volunteers and the Blanco County 4-H and FFA Youth Council board. Exhibitors, parents and other volunteers showed up for a workday Dec.
David Smith, chair, called the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) meeting to order on Monday, Feb. 3 at 6:31 p.m. with commissioners: Chris Anderson, Mike Green, Susan Moore, Loris Perkins, Trey Priour and R. K. Seals present. First, announcements were made by the commissioners. Because Smith will be leaving for a year, Moore suggested to begin looking for his replacement.
On National Signing Day, Wednesday, Feb. 5, Blanco senior Walton Daves committed to play football at Texas Lutheran University in the fall of 2020. Daves will play safety on the Bulldogs defense, as well as possibly playing running back on offense. Daves played multiple positions for the Panthers these past four years. He played safety and running back his junior and senior years.
The 2020 Blanco baseball seniors signed a Panther baseball helmet and presented it to Mrs. Florine Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The presentation was made in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Lord, who have been dedicated Blanco fans for decades. Mr. Lord, age 99, passed away in December. Head baseball coach Bryan Wyatt stated, “We are dedicating the season to Mr.
The Lady Panther girls powerlifting team competed at a meet at the Texas Strength Systems gym in San Antonio Thursday, Feb. 6. The participants must complete a squat lift, a bench press and a deadlift. The best lift in each is totaled for the final score. Kiley Elrod placed third in her class with a combined lift of 700 pounds.
The Panther golf teams played their first tournaments of the 2020 season this past week. The varsity boys and varsity girls teams played in the Navarro Invitational at Starcke Park in Seguin. Lauren Anderson played in the girls varsity tournament Monday, Feb. 3. The varsity boys competed on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Jacob Gallas shot an 85 to lead the Panthers.
The Lady Panther basketball team clipped the Johnson City Lady Eagles 63-21 Friday, Feb. 7 in a District 25-3A match-up. Blanco led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. The halftime score was 44-10. The Panthers led 57-15 at the end of the third quarter. Blanco now holds a 23-6 overall record and a 9-1 district record.
The Panther basketball team defeated the Johnson City Eagles 96-41 Friday, Feb. 7 and outscored the IDEA Montopolis Bulldogs 76-49 Tuesday, Feb. 4 to keep themselves on top of the District 25-3A standings. With three district games remaining, the Panthers are 12-1 in district and 25-7 overall. Jarrell is in second place with a 9-2 district record.
Dylan LaRue sprints to first base, and on to second, and on to third, for a triple during the varsity scrimmage against the Luling Eagles Saturday, Feb. 8.
Melba Laverne Miller Cowsert passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020. Born to Jack and Vera Miller on Oct. 27, 1920 in Joshua, she grew up in Burleson with her sister Jackie (Jacqueline), brother Buddy (Whit) and lifelong friend Genevieve Harris. At an early age she developed a passion for horses.
Terry Wayne Newby, 61, of Kingsland, passed away on Feb. 5, 2020 at his home in Kingsland. Terry was born in Marlin to Patsy and James Wayne Newby on Sept. 22, 1958. He graduated high school from Rosebud Lott High School. He met the love of his life and married Lisa Newby six months later on June 5, 1982 in Port Acres.
