Everyone is expecting there to be some changes at the high school this upcoming school year, but one person who is not faint-of-heart is the new animal sciences teacher. Kayla Brock is starting her agricultural sciences teaching career at Blanco High School. The Houston native graduated from Tarleton State University in May with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural services and development. “I’m excited to be with the kids and to start my career,” Brock said.
The Blanco County Commissioners Court meeting began budget discussions at 10 a.m. on July 14, after a 10 minute recess during their meeting. Concerns about the county employees’ salaries were discussed. Complaints about county employees are being paid too low have been heard from various people. County Judge Brett Bray suggested a 6 percent salary increase for all employees, and this would increase benefits as well.
The Blanco City Council meeting was called to order by Mayor Pro Tem Martin Sauceda at 6:08 p.m. with council members: Mike Smith, Matt Lewis, Keith McClellan and Deda Divine present. McClellan attended the meeting virtually via GoToMeeting. After the pledge was recited, the council skipped ahead and discussed action on COVID-19 updates.
Friends of Blanco State Park is a non-profit organization committed to the preservation, protection and improvement of the park, which is located at 101 Park Road 23. “Our mission is to work in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife to maintain and protect the park’s natural beauty, for current enjoyment and that of future generations.” The organization puts the donations and funds directly back into Blanco State Park.
Results of the 2020 District 10 4-H Record Book competition were released recently, with three Blanco County 4-H members placing. Celeste Campa placed third with her record book in the Fashion and Interior Design category. Celeste has taken her sewing skills to the next level by opening her own Etsy shop. Brailee Snow placed fourth in the Goat category.
The July 15 meeting of the Blanco Coalition of Awareness, Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse was called to order at 11:30 a.m. by project coordinator Amber Corder, and was held via Zoom. Corder provided a brief update on the Hidden in Plain Sight event. Creating a virtual room to explore was discussed and training for teachers will take place soon. Next, the coalition members watched part of a webinar that focused on how to implement strategies virtually.
There are 69 active cases of COVID-19 in Blanco County as of Monday morning, according to the Blanco County Office of Emergency Management. Active cases jumped five in the last week and 18 in the past two weeks. Recoveries moved from eight to 11 in the last week. There are currently 40 cases under investigation, compared to 51 a week ago. The five new confirmed cases were previously cases under investigation, the BCEM said.
A new sign acknowledging the donation from Marci and Louis Henna now graces the Blanco County Community Resource Center (CRC) in Johnson City. The Hennas made a generous donation in April. Marci Henna grew up in Johnson City. As the owners of the Henna Chevrolet auto dealership, the Hennas are a well-known name in Austin.

About Evin: He has taught at Blanco High School for five years and consider himself “incredibly lucky to spend my time with some of the best and brightest future scientists and engineers.
Kinder Morgan presented a donation of $50,000 last Wednesday to the Blanco Education Foundation. The Blanco Education Foundation partners with the community to provide funds “beyond those available through state and federal revenues” for a variety or projects at Blanco ISD, focusing on those that are “innovative education proposals that will impact significant numbers of students and improve student achievements.” One way they do this is by allowing teachers to apply to BEF for grants ...
The University Interscholastic League on Tuesday morning issued a revised calendar and guidelines for dealing with COVID-19. The revised calendar allows schools in classes 1A-4A to begin football and volleyball practices on Aug. 3. Competitions for volleyball may begin Aug. 10, with team tennis and cross country competitions allowed starting Aug.
