One Blanco man, a lifelong Christian, saw a chance to make a difference in the world by starting a nonprofit organization that founds schools in a war-torn African nation. The Blanco Good Samaritan Center’s thrift store will be open Thursdays starting Oct. 1. Hours will be noon to 6 p.m., each Thursday, while donations of household items will be accepted from noon to 5 p.m. that day. Hand sanitizer use will be required prior to entering the store. Masks, covering the nose and mouth, will be required to be worn at all times in the store for those age 5 and up. Only limited numbers of customers will be allowed in store to encourage social distancing.
Mayor Pro Tem Martin Sauceda called the Blanco City Council special meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. on Sept. 22. There were no announcements or public comments. The public hearing opened at 6:06 p.m. and provided an opportunity for citizens to express opinions regarding the proposed budget and tax rate. On Saturday night, Blanco was treated to an extraordinary concert under the stars in the Uptown Blanco Courtyard by the quintet Windsync. This performance kicks off Blanco Performing Arts’ Silver Linings season for 2020-21. The experience was equally appreciated by the audience who have been somewhat cooped up by the COVID pandemic and this amazing group of musicians who have also been restricted by COVID-19 and unable to perform in public since Feb.
The Blanco Buggy Barn was the setting for Blanco Young Life’s 2020 Banquet, and the rain and COVID-19 pandemic did not dampen the enthusiasm. A group of about 80 guests enjoyed a fun evening that included fellowship, a meal and engaging speakers who shared the purpose of Young Life. Social distancing was observed in accordance with local COVID-19 guidelines, and the large, spacious area was the ideal venue.
COVID-19 precautions haven’t dampened the homecoming spirit at Blanco High School, as evidenced by the number of students participating in ‘Pajama Day’ Monday. The week-long celebration wraps up Friday with the 7:30 p.m. homecoming football game against Canyon Lake, and the crowning of the homecoming queen will be held at halftime of the game.
It was all Blanco all the time. The Panther varsity football team avenged its 2019 season-ending loss to the Johnson City Eagles in style as they rolled over their in-county rival with a 63-7 road win Friday. In 2019, the Panthers and the Eagles were in the same district. The Eagles came out strong in the final district game defeating Blanco 31-14.
The Blanco volleyball team started District 3A-25 matches with two shutout wins last week. The Lady Panthers opened league play Tuesday, Sept. 22 with a win over the Comfort Deer, 25-17, 25-15 and 25-11. They continued their stellar play Friday by defeating the Lago Vista Lady Vikings 25-18, 25-12 and 25-18.
Three Blanco cross country runners medaled at the Comfort meet held Saturday. For the boys, Hayden Dotson medaled with a time of 20:29 and finished 25th at the meet. Also for the Panthers, Joshua Ludolph took 30th place with a time of 21:24. Two Lady Panther harriers medaled at Saturday’s meet. Evelyn Trammell medaled with a 10th place finish, in a time of 13:51.
The Blanco junior varsity football team picked up a 21-6 win over Johnson City last Thursday. After a scoreless first quarter, Blanco took over after a punt at the Johnson City 42. The Panthers moved the ball down the field on a pass from quarterback Cameron Anderson to Estevan Lopez and carries by Fernando Palacios and Estevan Lopez.
Vivian Kay Sublett, 80, of Blanco, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020 in Kingsland. Vivian was born March 28, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan to Kenneth C. Pellett and Marce (Johnson) Pellett. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Tommy A. Sublett in March of 2019. Vivian and Tommy were foster parents for over forty-seven years where they took care of 287 foster children who they loved and help mold into responsible and happy young men and women.
Brigadier General (Dr.) Craig A. Manifold, USAF (RET) (BVT) passed away suddenly due to natural causes in his Helotes home on Sunday, Sept. 20. Born to the late H. Hughes and J. Sylvania (Hersey) Manifold in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania on April 6, 1963, he is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Denise L.
